Yes- this 100%! In the 80s we spoke a lot of the first world and the third world and except for a few exceptions like Singapore it seemed that a substantial portion of the world was doomed to live in inescapable deep poverty. Things are much much better!

During summer abroad as part of my MBA program I was scheduled to spend a month at an Aerospace company in Southern France. In August. I turned up and they said 'nice to meet you. Nobody's here. We suggest you go explore Europe.' Suggestion taken.

For Black people, Black immigrants, a shackling like this is just too much. As everybody knows: The statue of liberty has a BROKEN shackle at her feet. Immigration should signify freedom, not slavery!

As an adaptation of Homer’s epic, the Honda Odyssey is a complete disaster. With its roomy cabin and rear entertainment system for the kids, the minivan foregrounds concerns that only arose with the American nuclear family and say nothing about the brutality that underlay the Bronze Age.

In an age of creeping relativism, a universal moral law still exists. Threatening to end an entire civilization of 90 million people in order to bend a nation’s conduct to your will is grossly morally wrong. It is evil. And we should say this loudly.

We didn't ask for this technology and most of us don't want it. But this is a fundamental human rights issue. The decisions we make now as this technology is in its infancy will define our relationship with this technology going forward. We need to rise to the occasion.

If you begin Star Trek: Voyager episode Spirit Folk at exactly 11:49:35 on New Year's Eve, Ensign Harry Kim will kiss a cow as the clock strikes midnight. Join in a very dumb annual tradition and start 2026 off on the right hoof.
Star Trek Voyager scene. It's a romantic evening on the streets of a charming little town with I'm sure a folksy name like 'Fair Haven' or something. Ensign Harry Kim, dressed in an overcoat, leans in with a full heart and closed eyes and kisses a large black and white Holstein cow right on the mouth. Two closed captions are simultaneously present: On Harry's side of the screen the caption reads, "(gasps)" and on the cow side of the screen the caption reads, "(moos)".

The subject of those quotes had been on his mind for a while. Here's a prescient passage Carl Sagan wrote one year before that last interview, in his 1995 book “The Demon Haunted World.” Replace "crystals" and "horoscopes" with "cell phones" and "Facebook" and it could have been written yesterday.
Quote by Carl Sagan: “Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.”

Our ability to comprehend daily events has been corrupted by a toxic info environment where political & attentional dynamics distort & manipulate our “collective sensemaking” processes. Our “official” sources are now products of that same environment. Reality fractures, along with the social fabric.

You can make most every argument about how anything in history could have been done better but there is just no case that Achilles at Troy, Lincoln at Gettysburg, Truman after Hiroshima, or Churchill on D-Day would have been more effective by concluding:Thank you for your attention to this matter.
