I read somewhere a comment from a Japanese business person asking why the UK insists on running its universities like corporations when its universities are great and its corporations are terrible. But I guess Thames Water is the model for everything in post-Thatcher Britain.

"We're all worried," as what it means to do research (in my field, Theoretical CS) seems to be shifting, and shifting fast. What to do? Senior researchers must lead by example, knowing that not everything will pan out. What I'm suggesting below may not work everywhere, but here's my own advice: 1/

About 70% of CS submitters preferred liberal policy. I'd be interested to see a long-term analysis of citation/influence across the two policies, but of course we don't have that data yet. I'd predict at least there would be a difference for citation/influence, if homogenization worries are valid.

Of course, philosophy might not be like CS. I think novelty/originality/writing quality is important in CS articles too. But I more strongly reject the position that philosophy writing is just about coming up with the longest list of valid arguments and true propositions.

Philosophy editors: Both NeurIPS and ICML have adopted a "dual policy" approach to AI-generated submissions. You can submit/review under either a conservative (AI banned) or a liberal policy. They find almost no difference in rates of acceptance or reviewer ratings across policies.

The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

I love Chiang, but answering the questions he raises is actually a lot harder than he seems to think. We'd have to define terms like "understanding" and provide evidence that the AIs don't satisfy the criteria. Much of this article is one big exercise in what we call the "redescription fallacy".
