Are Linux and Open Source Un-American?
Community
by Steve Coe
on February 21, 2001

Jim Allchin, Microsoft Windows operating system chief, was quoted in an article about open source last week. I advise any Linux user to go and read it if you haven't already, as it's great comedy material.

According to the hive mind of Microsoft, open source should be made illegal. There's no way around it, this is the bottom line. Want to write your own code and release it into the community? Congratulations, come with us Sir/Madam, we have this nice little grey room for you. Don't worry about the bars on the windows, they are there for our protection in case you somehow manage to write a graphics viewer or a Perl script to terrorize the world.

Ordinarily, a mere underling like Mr. Allchin wouldn't be taken too seriously, but Microsoft speaks with one voice, and we all know who he is channeling.

As a member of the Linux and Open Source communities, I am appalled and outraged by his comments and wish to respond. The article shows Microsoft is scared. Very scared. So, will they build a better product? Nah, to hell with it, they'll just get the government to outlaw the competition.

Can the president use taxpayer funds to air his old campaign ads on TV?

No. Federal appropriations law has long barred using taxpayer funds for political advertising.

I mean, not to toot our own horns, but we all knew we’d end up here, right? Seeing a LOT of these. All authentic, albeit bluechecked.
I say this as a 3-time Trump voter, a lifelong Republican who spent an embarrassing amount of money on merch and travel to Trump rallies and DC…

I was duped. The past 14 months have been betrayal after betrayal. It sucks admitting I got it wrong. No, I’m not saying Kamala would have been better. But Trump is a politician, a glorified snake oil salesman. He is not God nor should he be worshipped as one. And we need to hold our politicians accountable.. ESPECIALLY the ones we voted for and sacrificed friendships, jobs and family over.

Trump is now attempting to bully his base into supporting another reckless foreign war, ignore the Epstein files and now, accept data centers or else you want to be “backwards and poor”. I’ve never been in an emotionally abusive relationship… and I’m not about to start now.

Thank you for your attention to this matter🫡🇺🇸

Plain Text Accounting is Pretty Cool
I like to keep track of my finances pretty religiously. I don’t really budget, I am just very obsessive about tracking every expense, and ensuring that my overall savings rate is high1. I started by using Mint (may it rest in peace) and when it got killed, I switched to Rocket Money. Eventually I got annoyed with that due to it not supporting connections to some of my accounts and I ended up keeping track of my finances manually in markdown files in a git repo for a few years.2 Last year, I started using Origin, which was pretty good. However, recently I started looking for a new solution due to a few reasons:

An insidious dynamic inherent in prediction markets is that if you know of an outcome you can change, placing a bet in that outcome makes you more likely to manipulate the outcome or to stay passive to ensure your prediction pays out. Not great for a free society…
