my current favorite jwst images 🌌
A star cluster is shown inside a large nebula of many-coloured gas and dust. The material forms dark ridges and peaks of gas and dust surrounding the cluster, lit on the inner side, while layers of diffuse, translucent clouds blanket over them. Around and within the gas, a huge number of distant galaxies can be seen, some quite large, as well as a few stars nearer to us which are very large and bright. The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which, have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view. This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner. An infrared light echo traveling from the lower left through the upper right of the image. The image is speckled with dozens of white stars, some showing Webb’s signature 8-point diffraction spikes, against the black background of space. The image also shows tightly packed, glowing red filaments that resemble muscle fibers or wood grain.⁣

Presenting the Eighth Wonder of the World: The Rainbow Nebulae, a symbol of hope and inclusivity. A celestial masterpiece formed by interstellar gases and cosmic dust, spreading vibrant hues across the universe. Author: @venusianchron.bsky.social
A stunning cosmic landscape featuring two prominent nebulae with radiant colors—reds, oranges, yellows, and blues, contrasting against the dark expanse of space. Twinkling stars fill the background, while wispy tendrils of gas and dust form intricate, organic patterns, adding depth and texture. This artwork falls under the genre of Astronomical and Space art.

Leo P. This is a star-forming dwarf galaxy, located about 5 million light years away from us (blue stars on the bottom-right side of the image). 🔭 🧪
The image from Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) combines infrared light at wavelengths of 0.9 microns (represented in blue), 1.5 microns (green), and 2.77 microns (red). The stars in Leo P appear blue in comparison to the background galaxies for several reasons. Young, massive stars that are common in star-forming galaxies are predominantly blue. Leo P also is extremely lacking in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, and the resulting “metal-poor” stars tend to be bluer than Sun-like stars. A bubble-like structure at bottom center is a region of ionized hydrogen surrounding a hot, massive O-type star.

These shimmering cosmic curtains show interstellar gas and dust that has been heated by the flashbulb explosion of a long-ago supernova. The gas then glows infrared light in what is known as a thermal light echo. As the supernova illumination travels through space at the speed of light, the echo appears to expand. Hubble image of Arp 300, also known as UGC 05028 and UGC 05029 . UGC 05028 (smaller spiral) and UGC 05029 (larger spiral) form an interacting galaxy pair. The bright knot in UGC 05028 may be another small galaxy. Credit: NASA/ESA/J. Dalcanton, R. Windhorst, Gladys Kober Source
The frame is dominated by a pair of spiral galaxies. The larger galaxy to the bottom right is seen nearly face-on. It has a small yellow core and many spiral arms that are dotted with blue star clusters, with more star clusters appearing on the top of the galaxy, the side that faces its companion. There are a few brown dust lanes, concentrated near the inner spiral arms. The smaller spiral galaxy to the upper right has a yellow bar structure that is surrounded by blue star clusters that only very roughly form spiral arms. On the right side of the galaxy is a yellow knot of stars that is brightest in its center, crossed by brown dust lanes. This may be a seperate dwarf galaxy that is either in front of the smaller spiral or is in the process of merging with it. Other distant galaxies and stars fill the black background of space.

NEWS: Hubble detected an unusual star that spins over seven times faster than our sun. Known as a “blue lurker,” it probably got a turbo-boost from the merger of two accompanying stars that fed material onto the star, increasing its rotation speed: bit.ly/3BB3yom #AAS245 🔭 🧪
Illustration titled “Evolution of ‘Blue Lurker’ Star System.” It features six boxes, in two rows of three. The top left shows a large circular path of a star surrounding a small circular path of two rotating stars. The top middle box shows two stars rotating around each other, shown with blue streaks, and a third star is in the distance. The top right box shows a large fiery orange star with a feeding line to another distant star. The bottom left box shows a small yellow star on a black background surrounded by a faint red ring of gas. The bottom middle box shows the yellow star with a white box around it. Lines lead from this small box to the bottom right panel, showing a large fiery yellow star. The words “Artist’s Concept” is at the bottom right.
