The fundamental problem with our democracy isn't the libs supposed ineffectualness, it's the fact that a substantial portion of our 'demos' is composed of bigoted morons who've been voting against progress since the 70's (at least).

It's funny how so many of these "Dems suck" arguments seem to boil down to "Dems suck because they tried to work within democracy instead of seizing absolute power in a coup and sending every right-winger to re-education camps".

So I'm going to need people to scream about this like they've been screaming about KOSA and the SAVE Act. Take it from me, the non-binary Floridian: YOU DON'T WANT THIS. YOU DON'T. YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR HOW MUCH THIS WILL DISRUPT YOU AND YOUR KIDS' LIVES.

Those who weren’t resigned to the Math Idiot Garbage Bin as kids may not grasp how much “if you’re bad at math, you’ll die in a ditch and all will be better off for it” sentiment was floating around in the 90s and 2000s, but it sure felt real to me. (my parents are great! It didn’t come from them!)

"If voting actually worked, they'd make it illegal!" *glances over at gerrymandering, voter suppression/intimidation, historical poll taxes and literacy tests, current attempts to repeal the VRA, DHS trying to extort Blue States' voter records, etc. etc.* "...you don't say"

It's almost like people realized that wasn't feasible and invented the concept of representatives for precisely that reason.

God, imagine having to be tuned into the discourse 24/7 and be fully informed and up-to-date on literally every single issue, argument, proposal, or what have you in order to make a responsible informed decision at a moment's notice... on top of your day job, family, chores, hobbies, etc.

It is the worst thing an ostensibly left-aligned political figure can say on the subject, short of going full gender critical/TERF. So while I am glad that no prominent Democrats have fallen for it, I don't think it's unjustified to feel anger at those that promulgated it.

Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
So to blame trans people for both Dems' loss in '24, and the persecution we're currently undergoing, is wrong, both morally and factually, and serves no purpose other than giving politicians a reason to throw us under the bus in pursuit of the mythical moderates.

Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
The premise is false. All of it. It's Republicans who are obsessed with Trans people. It's Republicans who made Trans people a focus of their campaigns. It's Republicans who invented this entire moral panic, from sports to bathrooms to youth care.
100
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
Trans people didn't "overplay our hand" the Right went overboard with fearmongering and propaganda and "gender critical" writers at the Atlantic, NYT, and all over the MSM (including the British press) helped sanewash and launder it into "acceptable" mainstream discourse.
110
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
Think about that: gay marriage had *just* been legalized, and even back then trans people were such a non-issue in the public consciousness that the attempt to stir up a moral panic about bathroom predatoes fell flat on its face.
100
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
If you recall, the first bathroom bans happened in like 2016, right after Obergefell. And it was so transparently obvious what Republicans were trying to do that nobody fell for it. The bans were universally ridiculed, companies and sports teams boycotted whole states over it.

Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
So the idea that supporting trans rights cost Democrats the election is flatly untrue. Moreover, trans rights *weren't even a major contentious issue until Republicans made it one!*
110
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
Trans rights were never an all-consuming priority of the Democratic Party, nor were they a major pillar of any Democratic campaign in 2024. In surveys practically no-one who voted for Trump listed trans issues as a major concern.

Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
She might have a point in an absolute vacuum, but the reality is that the whole framing of this "debate" is false.
100
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
So you would be ok with a politician saying mass deportation is necessary, just as long as they still vote for ACA subsidies?
000
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
I'm glad she *didn't* end up throwing us under the bus in the name of chasing the center, but she still endorsed talking points meant to justify that. She's owed forgiveness, not apology.
000
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
Ok, that's all fine and dandy, but also irrelevant to the topic at hand? The problem with McBride--early on--isn't that she wasn't wholly focused on trans issues, it's that she was utterly obsequious in the face of rank bigotry and actively endorsed anti-trans talking points.

On Ezra Klein's podcast. Specifically an episode titled "Sarah McBride on Why the Left Lost on Trans Rights" with a thumbnail captioned "The illiberalism of the left". Kinda says a lot right there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that she's been doing good and vital work since. But let's not be dishonest here, there's a BIG difference between: "not being performative" and "blaming trans people for our own persecution while giving credence to the idea that our rights are a fringe liability"
100
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
She did endorse the "Democrats lost because they were too focused on trans issues" myth though, including blaming the current bigoted fervor on trans people "overplaying our hand" (instead of, y'know, the 4+ years of constant fearmongering). Did she ever apologize for that?

Transphobia is a cancer of the heart and mind. It is a useless fear, based on ignorance and cruelty. Trans people are not responsible for a single one of the problems we face. Do the world a favor and grow the fuck up.

It won't be enough to simply get rid *him*, or even his whole regime. If America doesn't fix the political, societal, and cultural rot that lead us here, then there will inevitably be another Trump.
000
Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
In a sense he is a necessary punishment, because America was doomed to produce and elect someone like him eventually. He (and MAGA more broadly) is the inevitable result of our current trajectory. The coalescence of every malignant social and political trend, every unresolved historical sin.

He embodies our worst traits. He speaks to our worst impulses. He lays bare all the hypocrisy, dysfunction, and plain evil festering in our society through his unabashed shameless revelling in it.

Robyn Writes Stuff @bynthebard.bsky.social · 26/01/2026
That's not without merit though. In many ways, Trump is the most American President, a living embodiment of everything wrong with American politics and American culture.

I think it comes down to misogyny tbh. Leftists want "Warrior Daddies" just as much as the Right do, and they're willing to turn a blind eye in pursuit (see also: Luigi Mangione). Newsom is hardly a fellow traveler, but he is antagonizing the admin in a purposefully macho and aggressive manner.

Also...I guarantee trans people are actually more than 1% of the population. Probably significantly more. That "less than 1% of the population" is just the people currently willing to come out as trans.

Have you heard that some people need to transport more than a macbook and a latte? Do you want to walk half a mile or more in 87ºF while carrying eight bags of groceries? Or a 20lb bag of pet food? Or a piece of furniture? How about in the rain? You want to do that in the rain?

You won't be able to buy anything because you'll have no way to transport it, so it's kind of a moot point.

Tumblr user nocryptographer:
I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation.
A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written.
AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence.
Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same.
There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that.
I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it.
If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene...
then it's real.

That's pretty commonplace in fiction, film, music, etc. But I don't know it would even be possible in journalism or opinion-writing. Your skill at wordcraft is of considerably less importance than the ideas you're trying to convey.
