“Give us a chance to give [Trump] a way out of this that comes to the right ending. … I don’t know if that’s possible.” - @durbin.senate.gov to Danes in Europe. Can the Senate Dems sound any more limp, facile and impotent to Europeans across the Atlantic?
Punchbowl screenshot

“COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A bipartisan group of lawmakers who traveled here on an urgent mission to reassure Danish leaders amid President Donald Trump’s escalating threats to acquire Greenland had a straightforward message.
In an interview between high-level meetings, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin summed it up this way: “Give us a chance to give [Trump] a way out of this that comes to the right ending.”
Durbin added: “I don’t know if that’s possible.”
The four-decade veteran of Congress, who’s been on dozens of CODELs, wasn’t just referring to Trump’s apparent determination to take over the Danish territory at all costs, or Republicans’ hesitation to openly defy him. Durbin was giving a sobering assessment of Congress as a supposedly coequal branch of government.
Over the span of several decades and under the leadership of both parties, lawmakers have ceded their authority to the executive branch on everything from war powers to tariffs to the power of the purse. Hill leaders have prioritized avoiding politically difficult votes or been slow to react – or done nothing – as presidents repeatedly pushed the limits of their own power at the expense of Congress.
“It’s not just this moment or this president,” said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), who co-led the delegation. “What makes this moment so hard is, if Congress can’t stand up in the face of something where there is no strategic value and lots of strategic harm…is Congress really willing to exert its authority at all?”
That’s what made this particular CODEL so uniquely difficult — and surreal.”

This is remarkable. More remarkable in light of current events is that the Australian government has not updated this since 19 November. Compare this with some of the places the Australian government ranks as requiring a high degree of caution. Total negligence and cowardice.
A screenshot of the travel advice for the USA from the Australian government from the Smartraveller website, that still advises people to exercise normal safety precautions in spite of its fascist government terrorising the people in several big cities.

Review of the Exposure Draft Legislation: Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026
Submission 14
Submission to the Review of the Exposure Draft Legislation: Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026
Dr David Brophy, University of Sydney
I refer to Section 80.2BF of the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026, the intent of which is to criminalise "publicly promoting or inciting racial hatred etc." In particular, I refer to paragraph 249 of the Explanatory Memorandum, which states:
249. New subparagraph 80.2BF(1)(b)(ii) is intended to include dissemination of ideas which assert that one group, distinguished by race, colour, national or ethnic origin, is inherently superior or inferior to another, ideas promoting exclusion, segregation or denial of rights based on race, colour or national or ethnic origin or encouraging contempt, hostility or dehumanisation of those groups.
I am concerned that a law prohibiting the dissemination of such ideas will capture within its scope ordinary and mainstream forms of support for Israel
As is well known, Israeli laws and policies are routinely criticised —by UN bodies, human rights organisations, and scholars as differentiating rights on the basis of nationality or ethnicity.
A prohibition extending to the "dissemination of ideas... promoting exclusion, segregation or denial of rights based on race, colour or national or ethnic origin" would therefore place supporters of Israel in the position of having to defend whether their political views fall foul of the proposed provision, even when those views are expressed in good faith and through lawful democratic advocacy.
This risk is heightened by the fact that support for Israel is not limited to abstract expressions of solidarity but often entails endorsement of specific legal and political structures: Israel's self-definition as a Jewish state; its constitutional order; its citizenship and immigration laws; and its security regime in the occupi…

I have decided to resign as Chair of the Adelaide Festival Board, effective immediately. Recent decisions were bound by certain undertakings and my resignation enables the Adelaide Festival, as an organisation, to refresh its leadership and its approach to these circumstances.

My tenure as Chair has been immensely enjoyable, as has working with the terrific AF team. I look forward to the future success of the Adelaide Festival.

I have no further comment.

yet again remembering senator chris murphy admitting right in public on twitter that we tried to coup venezuela in trump's first term and he was talking about this not to condemn it but to bemoan how trump bungled the job and embarrassed the US
The famous tweet from Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy on August 4th, 2020 admitting to the US government organizing the attempted coup in Venezuela. It reads "7/ Then, it got real embarrassing. In April 2019, we tried to organize a kind of coup, but it became a debacle. Everyone who told us they’d rally to Guaido got cold feet and the plan failed publicly and spectacularly, making America look foolish and weak."

Just your occasional reminder that Venezuela’s oil reserves are greater than Saudi Arabia’s, and nearly 4X those of the United States www.nytimes.com/2025/12/05/b...
Where there are large oil reserves
Canada
159 billion barrels
United States 81 bil. barrels
Venezuela
303 bil. barrels
10 bil. 25 bil. 100 bil.
Oil reserves, in barrels
Russia
80 bil. barrels
Saudi Arabia
267 bil. barrels
Nearly half of the world's proven oil reserves are in 12 countries in the Middle East.
