Just returned from a trip, with my daughter, to #Galena IL. We had perfect weather and a lot of fun. We toured old houses (incl Ulysses S Grant’s former home, before and after his Presidency), hiked in the woods with a herd of goats! and fed our caffeine and book addictions. Perfect vacay.

#LastFourWatched #LetterboxdFriday THE WEIGHT was a pleasant surprise with a great ending. Gorgeous photography too. THE GENERAL is my 4th B. Keaton film. Disappointed - though technically perfect, esp. for its time. But the Lost Cause bs tainted it and it just wasn’t as funny as the other 3.

The screens really are turning us all into gibbering morons with no way to separate useful from useless information and that ignorance really did create a despotic government who would genuinely think fire department means department of setting fires. I'll never doubt your wisdom again, Mr. Bradbury

Today on Reddit, someone said if you do a search on #pinterest, but use a swear word before or after your search term, then it virtually eliminates AI and ads. I tried it. It works! After I typed in “fucking vegetable soup” I only got veg soup recipes from real ppl. What a world we live in…

Among the bittersweetness of this time of year - the local high school is a mile or so from my house, so on certain Friday nights in autumn, I can hear the marching band’s drum line through my open window. 11 years ago, my daughter was the Drum Major of that band. 1/2

#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched Finally watched A HARD DAYS NIGHT to the end. A surprisingly good film. A sort of parody of cinema verité as well as The Beatles themselves. LINOLEUM and INTERLOPERS both provocative sci-fi, but very different in tone and mood.. Ignore THE EXORCISM. I mean it.

It’s that wondrous time of year when I dig out my comfiest cardigan sweater and fuzzy house socks from the back of my closet… But I also need to throw all the windows open to luxuriate in that cool, crisp, summer-is-ending-and-winter-is-nigh air. #autumn #melancholia

Poem for Monday 9.7.26 Before The Guests ~ Kate Baer —In the end, it's who we loved-/there is only one thing I'll care to remember: August nights, September mornings, entire seasons spent loving you.
Before the Guests
In the end it's who we loved-
how we'd sit out on the patio after it had rained, telling the same stories about the family dog.
How, when invited over for a campfire, a round of cards, a late-night summer swim, we'd pile in the car, show up empty-handed to a house lit up by familiar conversation. Yes, you can build whole kingdoms of picture-perfect laundry rooms and remodeled kitchen walls, but when the light comes from every direction, ready to carry you to the great unknown, there is only one thing I'll care to remember:
August nights, September mornings, entire seasons spent loving you.

Let me fall without regret
Like a leaf.

Several years ago, my husband built a toad/frog pond for me in my back #garden. Had a green #frog or two appear every summer, but haven’t seen any in past 3 yrs. So I was delighted to have a large green frog jump up in front of my face as I was weeding by it today. It’s too fast for a pic, tho’.

Went camping this past wknd (in a tent) with an amateur astronomy group (I am not one, but married to one) 15 yrs since I last camped, but I used to a lot, even backpacked. I love wilderness, being outside, and dark skies on a clear summer night are truly wondrous, but- I am done tent camping.

We need village and town governments in the Chicago suburbs to do this. These things are a menace on the sidewalks. The crazy thing is, there are designated bike lines on most of the side streets and some main roads in my town, and others nearby.

Listening to The White Album. #TheBeatles. 1968. This album is so 1968 but it’s also timeless. Honestly, it’s improved with age. I am blessed and privileged to have lived at the same time as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Their songs saved me, and save me still

Increasingly, Soylent Green serves as one of the best metaphors for AI -- it's taking all that we are, as people, chumming it up, and feeding the slurry back to us. We're told that we need it, it's nutritious, it'll save the world, even as it damns it and us.

Yesterday, I got a short haircut, for the 1st time in years.. I also finally got more than 7 hours of sleep last night. Huh. Who knew all that extra hair was weighing me down, causing me to lose sleep, even.. Yes, I’m sure that’s the reason.

HOW WE DISAPPEAR

I am in the store touching things.

Linen napkins, a blue bowl.

The world is on fire and I am choosing between two kinds of soap.

Everyone here is doing this, filling carts with small comforts while somewhere a child
goes to bed hungry, while the earth heats,
while men make decisions about who gets to live.

I know what this is, this careful arranging
while everything collapses.
This is how we survive.

And also how we disappear.
