I’ve been asked to weigh in on the debate over whether to bring an iced coffee to an interview. It doesn't matter. Iced coffee is NOT why it's hard to land a job right now, and it's NOT why Gen Z can't get ahead. Our economy is rigged. We need to change that.

Perhaps it would be helpful if Jack Smith weren't the only one in the room that was sworn in for the hearing? Perhaps there is a nuanced answer to this, but after yesterday's clearly messed up presentation, think whatever rules govern senatorial behavior could use an update.

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]
JPEG version of a 1-page Factsheet: El Niño 2026-2027: A Potentially Historic Global Climate Event
By Daniel Swain, PhD | August 2026

There is a banner image depicting projected warming of the Pacific Ocean by early winter.

The content begins:
"What is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural cycle, known as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that occurs roughly every 2-7 years in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Niño events, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warms to well above typical levels. El Niño directly affects local climate in the countries closest to the unusually warm ocean waters, but can also indirectly influence the climate of distant regions thousands of miles away. During the strongest events, El Niño can profoundly affect climate even on global scales, causing temporary planetary warming and disrupting large-scale precipitation patterns..."

Tweed is such a beautiful fabric to wear this time of year because it produces, in Dolly Parton's phrasing, a coat of many colors. Even a solid-colored brown is not just brown, but bits of red, blue, and yellow to produce something that looks lifted off the Scottish landscape.
There are two photos taped together. The top shows a brown stone building with a brown thatched roof. It's surrounded by green grass, stone walkways, and blue-gray sea. Below is a checked brown tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The one at te top shows a rocky hillside with green and straw-colored grass, gray rocks, and a tan sandy beach below. The blue waters are crashing at the shore. Below is a green herringbone tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The top shows a field of green and straw colored fields with bits of purple flowers. Below is a a series of checked brown tweed that reflect the colors in the landscape above it. A swatch book of solid-colored tweeds. The green tweed has visible flecks of red, gold, and blue.

Amen.
Maria Ressa stepped up to the UN microphone in a moment that felt equal parts obituary and call to arms. She did not read a manifesto; she read the weather: the world sits “on the rubble of the world that was,” she said, institutions buckling under engineered untruths, democracies hollowing out at the seams. This is not drama; it is a diagnosis with a bone-deep pedigree. Ressa is a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureate who spent a decade building Rappler, documenting extrajudicial killings, surviving arrests and smear campaigns, and refusing to let a state erase the record.
“Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust.” - Maria Ressa, UNGA
That sentence is the spine of her case: when facts disappear, so does shared reality; when shared reality disappears, so does the practical possibility of democracy. She calls the era we live in “an information Armageddon”, not an inevitable apocalypse but a battle to be fought, and won, or lost depending on what we do next.
