He appears to think that the word "synoptic" means there are narrative omissions in the tradition that he hopes to fill out in his retelling?

I just spoke with Mitch McConnell for about 20 minutes. We covered a wide range of topics, and his grasp of complex policy and granular detail remains absolutely unmatched. #MitchMcConnell #PhoneCall
[Condensed Version] I just got off the phone with Mitch McConnell. We spoke for just shy of 20 minutes. We covered a wide range of topics, including:
The Textual Integrity of the New Testament: He wanted to drill down into the transmission history of the longer ending of Mark (Mark 16:9–20). Mitch was particularly hyper-focused on whether the sudden shift in vocabulary and the introduction of snake-handling and poison-drinking suggest a 2nd-century scribal insertion. He noted that the Senate often operates on a similar kind of apocryphal logic.
Offshore Sportfishing Strategy: We had a vigorous, deeply technical back-and-forth about the mechanical toll of vertical jigging for amberjack. He was highly curious about using a slow-pitch 200-gram pink-and-silver butterfly jig over deep-water wrecks. He agreed that trying to bring a ninety-pound "reef donkey" up through a tax collector shark zone requires the exact same kind of relentless, exhausting rod-bending endurance it takes to break a Senate filibuster.
Regional Culinary Infrastructure: He asked a flurry of questions about the current state of the fried chicken at the Chicken Hut in Durham. He wanted reassurances that the chopped BBQ and the mac and cheese were maintaining their legendary standards, calling the restaurant a "critical pillar of southern cultural stability."
Continental Philosophy and Temporal Loops: To wrap things up, we had a brief, rather intense reflection on Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of the eternal recurrence. Mitch chuckled and remarked that the terrifying thought experiment—where you are forced to live your exact life over and over again for all eternity down to the smallest detail—is not actually a profound existential burden, but rather a standard Tuesday on the Senate floor during a debt ceiling debate. He noted that navigating the same repetitive institutional gridlock century after century requires a pure, unadulterated amor fati.

Study history. Every act of state brutality you tolerate when it’s used against “the others” will eventually be used against you. Once violence is normalized, the circle of “others” keeps widening. No matter what—you’ll find yourself inside it, in time.

I know this feels impossible now, but I swear, on January 6 itself, there was a pretty broad bipartisan consensus that storming the Capitol to find and kill lawmakers was bad, and that Trump was responsible for inciting his followers to try it

Violence is always unacceptable. Even when passions run high.

Anyone engaged in violence—especially against law enforcement—should be fully prosecuted.

God bless the Capitol Police and the honorable men & women of law enforcement who show great courage keeping all of us safe.

Stop the violence. Support Capitol Police.
12:02 PM · Jan 6, 2021Graham said, “Count me out. Enough is enough.”

Graham called Biden the “legitimate president of the United States,” and told colleagues definitively that “it is over” and the Biden-Harris administration would begin on January 20th.

Earlier Wednesday, supporters of Trump breached the U.S. Capitol, forcing a lockdown of the lawmakers and staff inside. Trump has claimed widespread voter fraud to explain away his defeat to President-elect Joe Biden, though election officials have said there wasn’t any.

Graham said that “if you’re a conservative,” the idea that Vice President Mike Pence could reverse the results of the election, as President Donald Trump had urged him to do, was “the most offensive concept in the world.”“There’s no question — none — that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it. The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president,” McConnell said. “The leader of the free world cannot spend weeks thundering that shadowy forces are stealing our country and then feign surprise when people believe him and do reckless things.”
