HOURCAR's last day is October 15. Call and write your city council member, county commissioner, and the governor about keeping carshare running.

Residential gas customers in Pennsylvania, the country's second largest producer, pay exactly the same amount now (inflation-adjusted) for gas as they did in the 90's, long before the fracking boom. PA produces 4,000% more gas, and residential customers are no better off. Data via EIA

The EIA ran a bunch of projections of how much fuel for gas plants is going to cost over the next 5 yrs. Most of them show ~40% ⬆️. Only one shows stability, and it requires wells to produce 50% ⬆️, undiscovered resources ⬆️ 50%, and drilling cost reductions to happen 50% faster.

Humans have seen this dynamic for over 700 years. In Tales of Count Lucanor, no one will tell the king that he’s naked, too afraid of what it might cost them. And so politicians and media outlets are silent, even as our planet breaks another record, day after day, barreling toward a Super El Niño.

I'm not well-versed enough to know that. I mean at a high level does this bill make it more likely or less that we'll accomplish the intent of the ESA

Think tanks will soon start releasing non-peer-reviewed modeling of how the permitting bill might affect pollution, if they haven't already. Most will secretly have lots of ideology-driven thumbs on scales. One big way to tip the scales is by ignoring pollution associated with oil and gas exports.

To put it another way - are the changes to ESA good or bad from a biodiversity perspective?
130
Brendon Slotterback @bslotterback.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
climate change is a long-term phenomenon, some species could be gone in years/decades! I think there are a lot of folks who care about "nature" that don't engage much with "climate change"
120
Brendon Slotterback @bslotterback.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
What if you didn't care at all about climate and your most important issue was saving the tiny amount of biodiversity we have left? What should you think about the bill? Why would states do a better job on this than the feds? I've seen surprisingly little discussion about this.

Brendon Slotterback @bslotterback.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Generally, if you see a take about "green groups", "enviros", or "the climate movement" without any more specificity, it is going to be a deliberate caricature for another agenda, or an unknowing generalization. Either way making it not that useful.

Data centers are driving a surge in Pennsylvania's electricity demand, and someone has to pay: data centers, or families already squeezed by rising bills. Shapiro's (D) plan to make data centers pay their fair share could save households $9.9B, but key pieces still need to become law.

The corollary to the permitting reform bill here would be to force all relevant DOE staffers to spend at least 50% of their workweek processing these grants Congress has already approved.

Bill’s piece outlines some of the risks & challenges of climate policymaking in this moment, including a sharp insight from @lissaharris.bsky.social. Solving climate has a running clock, GHGs we emit stick around for 100s or 1000s of years. Every ton and every year matters. I think the deal is good.

I think $150M of that is for states that take over ESA. Only $20M per year is for a new Permitting Improvement Fund at the federal level.

Brendon Slotterback @bslotterback.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
If agencies blow deadlines, the Chief Environmental Review and Permitting Officer and everyone with a "substantive role" reviewing the application has to spend not less than 50% of their workweek on the project. What if they're working on many projects at one time?
010
Brendon Slotterback @bslotterback.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Best I can tell so far is changes are very modest: $20M per year for a new Permitting Improvement Fund, but spread across 14+ agencies $150M/year for states if they take over ESA review An extra $50M/year for Historic Preservation (also for states) FERC gets some new hiring
