The NIH proposal to conceal reviewer scores from program officers, investigators, and advisory councils is ill-conceived, introduces disproportionate weight to small percentile differences, diminishes the role of scientific peer review, and should be withdrawn in its entirety. a 🧵

The CDC just re-opened a previously shelved study that would withhold the hepatitis B vaccine from children in Guinea-Bissau, despite decades of evidence showing it is safe and effective. This is a violation of human rights, using “science” to harm some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

9/ It is time to be angrier, more demanding, and more disruptive. Climate action adequate to the scale of the crisis will be uncomfortable. It should be. <fin>
170
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
8/ Speak to the devastation unabashedly. Stop accomodating every new threat in the name of pragmatism. Take disruptors seriously. Their demands look radical only because we keep treating comfort of the priviledged as non-negotiable.
180
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
7/ science has already given us extraordinary knowledge about what is happening to the planet, why it is happening, and many of the technologies and policies that could reduce the damage. the problem is not another panel explaining the science. we need real action commensurate with it.
190
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
6/ grassroots comunities are already doing much of the work glossy agendas try to describe as innovative, including building power, sharing resources, and sustaining communities inside systems that were never designed for them. These people are however often missing from the NYCW stages.
160
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
5/ The most hopeful conversations happened elsewhere: smaller rooms talking honestly about accountability, deconstruction, reconstruction, & what comes after the systems we relied on fail us. Not "how do we restore the system?" but "what do we rebuild in its place?"
170
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
4/ This is partly why the people outside the rooms during NYCW were so memorable. Their presence sharpened the contrast between discussing crisis politely and treating a crisis like a crisis.
160
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
3/ Adequately addressing climate change will be disruptive. It will challenge powerful interests, create political inconvenience. It will require scientists, activists, institutions, and the public to risk being called dramatic, impolite, difficult. Good. Be difficult.
170
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
2/ AI data centers make this especially obvious. Their enormous projected energy demands arrive amid a crisis already wildly off track. & yet much of the convo at NYCW was about how to accomodate rapid data-cener growth "responsibly." Sometimes the responsible answer is a hard no.
180
Brynn Paulsen, PhD @brynnpaulsen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I attended NY Climate Week w/ @standupforscience.net. I have some THOUGHTS. 1/ Climate change is an existential threat. Addressing it means confronting unequal harms, powerful political & financial interests, & an uncomfortable reality: good intentions do not necessarily produce adequate action.

Knowledge is NOT politically neutral. The scientific method is a tool for deriving knowledge. So why then, are we telling the arbiters of the scientific method and developers of knowledge to be politically neutral? Are scientists supposed to forsake knowledge for politics sake?
