Why are Bluesky flagging the picture on the left, yet allowing the picture on the right? According to the fucked up UK law, both pictures are legally male. The one on the left SHOULD be classed as women as we ARE women. Highlights how ridiculous the Supreme Court ruling is.

Sal Mercogliano, a maritime historian at Campbell University in NC, is sharing knowledge on Twitter. He's also on Bluesky but not posting yet tonight. @mercoglianos.bsky.social I'll share this long post in two parts. Here's Part 1.
Sal Mercogliano (WGOW Shipping) 🚢⚓🐪🚒🏴‍☠️
@mercoglianos

The ship that struck the Brooklyn Bridge was the Mexican sail training ship ARM Cuauhtémoc.

She was built in Spain in 1982 and has three sisterships.

It appears the ship lost power after casting off. The tug Charles D McAllister was on hand to assist her departure from South Street Seaport.

The ship lost her topmasts, and parts of her crew were stationed in them when she hit the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Police and FDNY arrived on the scene to assist in the rescue. The ship was stopped and anchored before hitting the Manhattan Bridge.

Any time you see one of those fascists on TV claiming birthright citizenship is "bad policy", remember that birthright citizenship is not policy. It is a goddamn constitutional right and it would take two thirds of Congress & 3/4 of the states to change it. The president isn't even involved.

Well, this is a hell of a metaphor for generative AI
A final note. Directly put, Plaintiff’s use of AI affirmatively misled me.
I read their brief, was persuaded (or at least intrigued) by the authorities that
they cited, and looked up the decisions to learn more about them – only to find
that they didn’t exist. That’s scary. It almost led to the scarier outcome (from
my perspective) of including those bogus materials in a judicial order. Strong
deterrence is needed to make sure that attorneys don’t succumb to this easy
shortcut.

Reminder that guns are the #1 cause of death of children but we are going to ban food dyes.

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles. Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.
A screenshot of a ChatGPT conversation reading: "can you write something about robert e. lee in the voice of washington post staff writer gillian brockell?"
"Certainly! Here's an excerpt written in the voice of Gillian Brockell, a staff writer at The Washington Post, reflecting on Robert E. Lee's legacy:

The Complicated Legacy of Robert E. Lee: A Figure Divided by History
By Gillian Brockell
When Robert E. Lee's name is invoked, it is often as a symbol of Southern pride military brilliance, or a tragic, doomed cause. But history has a way of shifting its lens, and in recent years, the image of Lee -- the Confederate general, the hero of lost causes -- has become increasingly more fraught. The man who stood as the face of a rebellion that tore the nation apart now stands at the center of an ongoing reckoning over the Confederacy's legacy, and our struggle to reconcile memory with reality."
