It’s easy (more easy than accurate) to dismiss academic critics of generative AI as uninformed or emotive, which is often anyway code for “moralizing.” But it’s remarkable how much gen AI boosterism requires feigning ignorance that theft and impersonation are widely seen as wrong, for good reasons.

Like, "take an unexpected interruption, comment on it, weave it into what you were going to say anyway, continue unflustered" is a skill that most people with a teaching role pick up fairly quickly, out of necessity. While impressive from a politician, it's not *supernatural* communication skills.

Have this just out with @MUP Migration and social policy in a changing world bridges the generally separate fields of social policy and migration studies. This book traces social policy responses to migration from the Industrial Revolution to today's era of globalisation and large-scale migration.

So I have a book out about the challenges and dilemmas arising from large-scale immigration. Of course I look at the benefits of integrating and incorporating migrants (and how social policy can help) but I also focus on the political obstacles that play out in many countries.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy: www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

The gridlock in supply is not going to be solved by immigration. If medium income people already here cannot compete with newcomers working in tech etc for whom new expensive apartments are being built, hard to see upside.

Bryan Fanning @bryanfanning.bsky.social · 12/09/2025
How? Existing supply rising slower than increase on population in need of housing; currently a slow down of new properties at a time of high immigration?
100
Bryan Fanning @bryanfanning.bsky.social · 12/09/2025
I wish it was as you say but high levels of immigration in recent years, in the absence of corresponding rise in the availability of housing, especially affordable housing for rent, is imposing a social cost on society, particularly in Dublin.
