Fossil Friday #337: A Different View of Lepidostrobus
Lepidostrobus is a cone from lepidodendron tree.  It was named in 1828 by Adolphe-Theodore Brongniart (1801 – 1876), who was a French paleontologist, considered by many to be the father of paleobotany.  He also named Lepidostrobophyllum which are the individual cone bracts of which Lepidostrobus is the whole reproductive organ. See Mazon Monday #202.

Fig. 2 (shortened, full legend in paper): Impact of deoxynivalenol (DON) and culmorin (CUL) on roots of seedlings of the wheat cultivar Apogee. (A, B) Seedlings were grown for 96 h in media containing different concentrations of DON and/or CUL: the numbers on the x-axis refer to the concentrations in mg l−1; Ctrl, control (no CUL or DON). (A) Primary root length and (B) total root length of the seedlings after 96 h (n=10); × denotes the arithmetic mean whilst circles denote outliers. Different letters indicate significant differences as determined by the Wilcoxon rank sum test using the Benjamini—Hochberg method to adjust for multiple testing (P<0.05). The full Padj values for (A) and (B) are shown in Supplementary Tables S5 and S6, respectively. (C) Representative images of seedlings after 96 h growth in medium containing 5 mg l−1 DON and/or CUL.

A 6,000 year-old pottery bowl with five small hippos and a crocodile. From the grave of a woman and child at Matmar, near Asyut, Egypt. Early Predynastic, Naqada I. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a handmade pottery bowl made from red polished clay. The bowl shape is rounded, tapering to a narrower rounded base, with a wide flaring rim. Attached around the rim there are five small hand-modelled figures of hippopotami and one crocodile. The bowl was broken when found, and has been restored. Diameter: 29.50 cm (max) Height: 13.80 cm.

It was excavated from a predynastic cemetery at Matmar by Guy Brunton circa 1929-31. It was found in grave 2646 which belonged to a female and child.

Some 3,300 years ago, an ancient Egyptian artist painted this comic illustration of a cat herding geese! 😻 They used a flake of limestone as a sketchpad for this fun scene. From Deir el-Medina, Thebes. 📷 Egyptian Museum, Cairo. #Archaeology
The image shows a buff-coloured flake of limestone with a painted illustration of a cat herding geese, displayed against a black background. On the left of the scene, a tabby cat (brown with black line markings) stands on its hind legs in a human-like pose, facing right. In its upraised left paw it holds out a wooden staff to keep six geese in order. In its right paw it is holding the end of a long crook which it rests on its shoulder. A bag hangs by a strap from the end of the crook behind the cat. The six geese in front of the cat are arranged in two rows of three, one row above the other. The geese have brown legs, and white bodies with black plummage detail. Three of the geese have black painted heads and necks; top left, top right, and bottom middle. Above the geese there is a curved double brown line representing a nest filled with four white eggs in a row. Flake dimensions: H 11 cm x W 11 cm.
