Media coalition: White House press ban targeting CNN, MS NOW, Politico is ‘illegal and unconstitutional’

“The New York Times will continue to withhold publication or distribution of images captured as part of the White House still photography pool, in support of the media organizations that President Trump has targeted with a ban. We’ll maintain this policy until a court has the chance to hear arguments on the legal claims filed by those media organizations. We remain committed to covering the president and his administration with thorough, unflinching news reporting.

Alongside the broadcast outlets that have suspended their video pool coverage of the president, The Times’s decision recognizes that barring these media outlets is unequal treatment and punitive retaliation for simply reporting the news.”

“The New York Times will not publish or distribute any images taken as part of the White House still photography pool today, in conjunction with the other members of that pool and in a show of support for the news organizations being unfairly targeted by the president’s barring of journalists from the White House.

We remain committed to covering the president’s travel to New York City today. Americans deserve a free and independent media covering their government without intimidation, as well as comprehensive coverage of newsworthy events.”

“President Trump and his administration are intent on intimidating and punishing media outlets who produce news coverage he doesn’t like. Some of these actions are illegal; nearly all fly in the face of precedent and the First Amendment. Their collective effect is an attempt to restrict Americans’ knowledge about their own government.

The courts have twice found that the Trump administration violated the Constitution by suspending reporters’ White House press passes. The president’s statement today is yet another retaliatory and unconstitutional threat. The Times stands in support of the news organizations being unfairly targeted by the president.”

“The appearance of Federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects. Our journalists report the facts and advance the American public’s right to know how their government is operating and their taxpayer dollars are being used. This brazen act should be seen as nothing more than an attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is happening in their country by intimidating journalists from doing their jobs.”

“Reporting isn’t treason. It’s foundational to a free press and the work that America’s founders wrote the First Amendment to protect. That includes making clear when the claims of government officials and the reality of their actions don’t line up. Our reporters, in this case, have been working carefully to provide the public with the fullest possible understanding of the reality of the military action in Iran. We will continue this important, constitutionally protected work.”

“Nicholas Kristof’s deeply reported piece of opinion journalism starts with a proposition to readers: ‘Whatever our views of the Middle East conflict, we should be able to unite in condemning rape.’ He draws together on-the-record accounts and cites several analyses documenting the practice of sexual violence and abuse conducted by various parts of Israel’s security forces and settlers.

The accounts of the 14 men and women he interviewed were corroborated with other witnesses, whenever possible, and with people the victims confided in — that includes family members and lawyers. Details were extensively fact-checked, with accounts further cross-referenced with news reporting, independent research from human-rights groups, surveys and in one case, with U.N. testimony. Independent experts were consulted on the assertions in the piece throughout reporting and fact-checking.”

“President Trump’s derisive comments to a New York Times reporter today are the latest example in his pattern of answering fair questions with inaccurate attacks. Contrary to the president’s false claims, our extensive reporting and polling during the 2024 presidential campaign captured the race in full, including his advantages. Mr. Trump himself celebrated this polling and reporting numerous times.

We ask questions of elected leaders to hold them accountable to the public they serve. Our entire White House team – including the talented journalist who posed questions to Mr. Trump today – reports with the same rigor and scrutiny on all who hold the office.”

Today’s arrest of the journalists Georgia Fort and Don Lemon is a troubling development in the escalating campaign of pressure and intimidation that the Trump administration has leveled against a free press in the last year. Federal judges twice rejected these charges for a good reason: Reporting on a protest is not a federal crime.

The arrests continue a clear pattern of ignoring established law and infringing constitutionally protected rights to target reporting the administration finds politically disfavorable.

“The reports of F.B.I. agents raiding the home of a journalist and seizing her electronic devices are deeply concerning and portray a stark threat to free press rights in this country. Actions like this inevitably impede reporters’ ability to gather news in the public interest and as a result make the government less accountable.

Reporting and newsgathering enjoy protection under the U.S. Constitution. Law enforcement intimidation like this imperils the transparency provided by independent media.”
