We got Photoshop on Linux before GIMP on GTK3

Photoshop is probably the biggest reason I’m a programmer today. I knew Adobe would never port it to Linux, and even though Wine runs it okay, a full native reimplementation in Rust is fucking crazy. Closed source moat is shrinking, a 12yo can vibe code w/e in a week. Never thought I’d see the day.

I kind of enjoyed Reddit for a while there, some of the more niche subs were ok sometimes. Unfortunately their app now defaults to an extraordinarily unpleasant For You feed that is effectively just r/all very time you pull it up, so I am heavily disincentivized from ever opening it again.

So I now only have 1 functioning LLM node with not enough vram to run parallel workloads. This means my wife and I have to agree on prearranged time slots for sharing it. Throughout the day we frequently asking one another “are you using Qwen right now?”

At least be consistent. Essentially all of the valid criticisms of LLMs are just as true for non-LLM machine learning models.

The "ML good, LLMs bad" crowd is increasingly removed from reality. Saw someone claim Google's new embeddings model is unrelated to LLMs, but if anything, the opposite is true. Embeddings are a critical component of all LLMs, it's just that they can be used for purposes other than generating tokens.

when i was still typing code in an IDE it was more important to me, i liked being able to just glance at docs or my terminal or whatever while programming without having to switch windows, but my pace & cadence has changed so much now that im satisfied with even just a phone screen most of the time

I’ve completely stopped caring about screen real estate, I used to want like 8 monitors at a desk but over the past year I’ve gradually gone back down to just my work laptop’s built-in display and nothing else

GPU i got for free a few months ago is now undeniably defective in a way that cannot be fixed by me. keeps falling off the PCIE bus & causing kernel panics at random times lol. it still boots & works, but dies after a few hours. this means i eventually wont be able to run my larger/smarter model.

I have been very interested in it since it first released but when I tried it a year or so ago it needed more time in the oven. Is there anything specific you prefer about it over GNOME?

Idc about vibe coding but I do get some perverse glee when I see people willing to use the nazi distro & end up having a bad time as a result. I hope it keeps getting worse for them, I want them to either understand why using the nazi distro is bad, or have a bad time.

Of course this is all a sign of a healthy FOSS ecosystem & both sides are necessary to an extent. My preference is mainly a result of the fact that most of the overfitted runtimes explicitly sacrifice accuracy in favor of speed improvements, & on my setup & use case, that tradeoff is not worth it.

Meadow Brook @brookmeadow.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I seem to have inadvertently kicked off a community-wide discussion relating to hardware specific runtimes vs the upstream “more generic” runtimes they are based on, & concerns about fragmentation. Fwiw I favor consolidated efforts over fragmented, overfitted runtimes, as I have Linux distro ptsd.

Tbh I'm kind of hoping the curve flattens soon so that it won't be such a tradeoff to run fully open source (rather than merely open weights) models. These log behind the frontier by quite a bit, but at least their training data is significantly more ethically sourced, which is important to me.

Totally, agents have a tendency to blindly trust web search results too much imo. I wonder if that could be accounted for by some clever tool call hooks on the harness side, pending the real solution which is likely just closing this gap in RL

Meadow Brook @brookmeadow.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Yeah in practice I do it that way too, especially when it's something I'm already pretty confident about independently of the model's opinion. It's interesting to me the different approaches to adversarial review prompting, and ppls reactions to the results can vary a lot
010
Meadow Brook @brookmeadow.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Tangent but at my job we've been experimenting with prompting to minimize the amount of bias introduced by latent sycophancy, in practice we found that phrasing it in open-ended way "what are best approaches to this problem" yields better results than "I like this approach, what's wrong with it?"

This type of neural network encodes a lossy simulation of a human-like reasoning process, not unlike other types of DL models which encode lossy simulations of other processes. That is the point. “Next-token prediction” is not inaccurate, but it is reductive; it misses the point.

Having seen this behavioral quirk before as well, it seems like an unintentional RL artifact, holding on to uncertainties that might make sense for a human engineer to have but no longer make sense when a machine is carrying out the task.

It looks like Clef is also a post-trained LLM. Props to them for at least releasing its weights for free though. Out of curiosity I just looked into Jev architecture & it turns out implementation details are sparse so now I'm actually less certain it's as novel as I thought. It is transformer-based.
110
Meadow Brook @brookmeadow.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
IMO, “after.” It is a rushed product, evidenced by the fact it’s an SFT of an LLM rather than anything close to the cost- & speed-optimized architecture used by jev. Jev value prop hinges on it being non-autoregressive and providing truly accurate confidence estimates. OpenAI’s offering is neither.
110
Meadow Brook @brookmeadow.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It’s also easily falsifiable by running an open weights model and open source harness on your own machine and directly observing the reasoning traces and tool call logs.

But it is hard to deny that over last few generations their ability to count and do basic math unassisted has improved enormously. This was once a salient point of criticism but I don’t think it’s that valid anymore

Meadow Brook @brookmeadow.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Frankly I still prefer to see them use gnu bc or whatever instead of doing the math “in their heads.” Just like with a human brain, I just don’t trust like that lol.
