It's Frocktober! I'm wearing a frock every day for the Australian Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation's campaign to raise awarenes of Ovarian cancer, and research funds. It's the most deadly of gynaecological cancers, and there's no early detection test. www.frocktober.org.au/fundraise/br...
A smiling middle-aged woman with shoulder-length grey hair is wearing a black calf-length dress, a rust-coloured hand knit cardigan, with a rust and black scarf. She stands in front of a bookshelf, and there's a tan and white dog looking at her.

More gas is used to convert gas to LNG exports than is used by the entire manufacturing industry. We don't need more gas. #NoNewGas #TAXtheGAS
Charts showing gas use/size by PJ:

LNG exports: 4,425PJ
LNG conversion plant use: 437PJ

we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind

A scientific paper already has a carefully thought out abstract & conclusions I can look at if I want an overview. A book is supposed to be a joy to read, an intellectual and emotional experience to relish. This is not something that advanced statistics can either add to or improve on.

A lovely few days back in Armidale, and I presented at the Folk Museum on my re-creation of an 1884 wedding dress - the 1st time the dresses have been together. Alas, I did not get proper photos, only this quick snap. I’m kicking myself I didn’t take better photos and hope someone did.
An older lady in a purple sweater and scarf stands beside a mannequin with a beige close-fitting 1880s dress with draped fabric over the hips and two rows of pleated fabric and silk satin decorations on the lower skirt. Another mannequin stands beside it, in the original extant dress, which is a yellow-cream in tone.

Beginning my research seminar, as always, with Lynn Hunt's essay How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around). Should be mandatory reading in light of the impact of AI. www.historians.org/perspectives...
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words, whether I am writing an essay like this one, a book chapter, a letter of recommendation, or an email message to a friend. Writing is time-consuming. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long airplane flight because you lose track of the passage of time altogether. It’s even better, from that point of view exclusively, than watching an episode of Mad Men on your laptop. Writing means many different things to me but one thing it is not: writing is not the transcription of thoughts already consciously present in my mind. Writing is a magical and mysterious process that makes it possible to think differently.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

Counterpoint: Since A.I. is built on intellectual property theft and the irreversible destruction of our natural resources, the wealth it generates must be seized for reparations, and the people enabling it thrown in jail.
His rationale is simple and compelling. “Since A.I. is built on the collective knowledge of humanity,” Senator Sanders writes, “the wealth it generates must benefit humanity.”

War as a moral metaphor is limited, limiting, and dangerous. By reducing the choices of action to “a war against” whatever-it-is, you divide the world into Me or Us (good) and Them or It (bad) and reduce the ethical complexity and moral richness of our life to Yes/No, On/Off.

For sure. The left and the right are not morally interchangeable, but humans are responding to the same underlying conditions of alienation and anxiety and loss of control. The difference is whether suffering produces empathy and solidarity or a desire to find someone even weaker to punish.

Discworld QOTD, from The Last Continent
Elsewhere, someone might have said, “It’s just books! Books aren’t dangerous!” But even ordinary books are dangerous, and not only the ones like Make Gelignite the Professional Way. A man sits in some museum somewhere and writes a harmless book about political economy and suddenly thousands of people who haven’t even read it are dying because the ones who did haven’t got the joke. Knowledge is dangerous, which is why governments often clamp down on people who can think thoughts above a certain caliber.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

This is bombshell stuff.
Together, alongside the mundane fare of a typical thought leadership conference, the documents show an extraordinary convergence of power. The registration records list General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's supreme allied commander Europe and the head of US European Command, who took the post in July 2025 and is recorded on the leaked list as having attended Dialog gatherings since 2021. The website directory names sitting Trump administration officials, two US senators, six members of the Paypal Mafia, a former Middle East chief of intelligence, and a sitting ambassador to the United States, along with the founders and directors of many of the country's largest surveillance, data-broker, and advertising-data companies.

Those executives appear side by side with senior US officials overseeing their industries. Auren Hoffman, Dialog’s chairman, founded the location-data broker SafeGraph and the identity-resolution firm LiveRamp, two of the most important suppliers in the consumer data economy. He appears in the directory alongside Treasury secretary Scott Bessent, whose department writes the rules on financial data, and Senator Ted Cruz, chairman of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, which oversees the Federal Trade Commission and its data-privacy authority.

Palantir cofounder Joe Lonsdale, whose software runs case management for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and data fusion for the Pentagon and intelligence community, is listed in the same society as Army secretary Dan Driscoll and Representative Jim Himes, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, which oversees agencies Palantir contracts with.
