It's Frocktober! I'm wearing a frock every day for the Australian Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation's campaign to raise awarenes of Ovarian cancer, and research funds. It's the most deadly of gynaecological cancers, and there's no early detection test. www.frocktober.org.au/fundraise/br...
A smiling middle-aged woman with shoulder-length grey hair is wearing a black calf-length dress, a rust-coloured hand knit cardigan, with a rust and black scarf. She stands in front of a bookshelf, and there's a tan and white dog looking at her.

A lovely few days back in Armidale, and I presented at the Folk Museum on my re-creation of an 1884 wedding dress - the 1st time the dresses have been together. Alas, I did not get proper photos, only this quick snap. I’m kicking myself I didn’t take better photos and hope someone did.
An older lady in a purple sweater and scarf stands beside a mannequin with a beige close-fitting 1880s dress with draped fabric over the hips and two rows of pleated fabric and silk satin decorations on the lower skirt. Another mannequin stands beside it, in the original extant dress, which is a yellow-cream in tone.

A series of adverts in The Argus 29 July 1854 by Mrs Tuckett, a milliner in Melbourne Australia includes an intriguing reference to a "Point Lace Berthe, worn in the reign of Louis XVI". Importing bundles of 2nd-hand clothing was common in this time - did she find a treasure? #fashionhistory
A series of newspaper advertisements that read:
Mrs Tuckett has just opened a superb lot of dresses direct from Paris.
Mrs Tuckette has a magnificent Point Lace Berthe, worn in the reign of Louis XI.
Mrs Tuckett, 57 Bourke-street, has just receied a case of elegant French Bonnets.
Mrs Tuckett has for inspection a splendid assortment of Coiffures, in Feathers, Flowers and Velvets.
Mrs Tuckett begs to call attention to her stock of Braided Pelisses and Children's Evening Dresses

Pippin loves you too. Having moved from the bush to a small city aged 12, she absolutely loves that there are lots of humans here to say hello to and be patted by. (She will love you even more if you take her for a walk!)

Small joys. A street sweeping truck just passed by. Pippin watched from the window. I was standing further back, probably not visible. And the driver waved at Pippin.

Pippin thinks I should stop staring at the screen and take her for a walk. She’s probably right. She thinks everyone should go for a walk, ‘cos that would be more people to meet and pat her.

Pippin thinks I should stop doom-scrolling and throw her Dino for her to catch. She is probably right. She is a wise doggy, full of love and energy.

One of my next projects - a muslin cap from La Mode Illustrée, 1861, number 48. Stitching helps to keep me sane during these stressful times.
Greyscale drawing from an 1861 fashion magazine of a side view of the head and shoulders of a woman. She wears a sheer cap over an arrangement of braids. The cap has a pleated frill around the head, edged with narrow lace with a ribbon similarly pleated and tied under teh cap at the back. Two 'streamers' edged with narrow lace hang down from the side-back of the cap. The woman is also wearing a close-fittin bodice with a white collar, trimmed with a ribbon bow at the centre front of the collar.

An outfit from a year or so back, inspired (loosely) by an extant pale green linen skirt and bodice in the Armidale Folk Museum. The original was for a very young woman. Which I am no longer. More info about the original outfit at: stitchinghistory.com/2023/01/1900... #dresshistory
A white lady with grey hair wearing a lavender coloured Edwardian outfit. The blouse has a high neck with white lace trim, pin tucks on the centre front and a row of lace on each side. The sleeves are full and gathered in at the elbow. The skirt is mostly plain but has box pleats at the side fronts from knee to floor held in place at the pleat with lace edging. She wears a lavender coloured belt that dips to a point in the front and has a triangular lace applique. She is standing in front of a plain beige curtain.

Hello BlueSky. Dress history, historical dressmaking, border collies, writing novels (as Bronwyn Parry), knitting, textile history, and social justice are my things. Also Oxford commas. Latest project: re-creation of an 1884 working class wedding dress: mine on R, original on L in each slide.
Side-front views of two mannequins in cream close-fitting bustle dresses of 1884 with drapery at hips, rows of satin decorations and pleats. On left is my re-creation, on right is the original dress. The satin decorations on the original dress is closer to the colour of the main dress, and slightly smaller proportionally. Side views of two mannequins in cream close-fitting bustle dresses of 1884 with drapery at hips that is pleated into the side-back seam. There is another draped piece flaring from the centre back that is gently pleated at the sides and attached towards the bottom of the skirt. Both dresses are worn over a small bustle which enhances the effect of the drapery. The skirt has rows of satin decorations and pleats. On left is my re-creation, on right is the original dress.
