RIP Esther Rantzen. I loved That's Life! as a kid, even though its very existence signified that the weekend was officially over and I had double P.E. horror in the morning. But somehow that strange whiplash amalgam of deadly serious reports and Great British Public whimsy functioned as a balm

Didn’t really post any pics while I was away. Here’s some from a repeat visit to Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears’ place in Aldeburgh, The Red House - a couple of John Pipers, a Mary Potter and the booze cupboard.

I’m catching up with Bake Off (haven’t bothered for last couple of series but Nigella has lured me back in). First observation is that Noel Fielding has had more filler than any of the cakes could possibly have in them.

Walked into the work loos yesterday evening and huge whiff of perfume someone had just sprayed that was instant nostalgia but I couldn’t place. Think it’s just come to me that it was Ghost. No idea that was still around or people still wore it!

Madonna Ray of Light on radio. My second year of uni soundtracked by this constantly at full volume as my housemate (a massive fan) sang along completely out of tune and at the top of his voice in a strong Brummie accent. Can never hear it without that.

My actual biggest childhood fear, but it’s extremely niche, was the Dutch Doll from nearby Finedon (which was stolen in the 80s) coming back to get me if I thought about it for long enough. Here is an extract from the wiki entry and a pic. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
At the Girls Charity School, founded in 1712, the doll was mounted over the door, where it may have been attached to a mechanism causing it to move when the door was opened. 3. It was believed that the doll had the supernatural ability to walk around, which led to legends about the doll's feet being chopped off. It is known that the doll was used as a threatened punishment whereby a child would be locked in a cellar with it.

The doll is carved from wood, 3 feet 6 inches (1.07 m) high, depicted in a blue dress, holding a bible in one hand and a scroll in the other which reads "Read Ye The Scriptures" John V. 39"

The mysterious nature of the doll's disappearance and the widespread belief in the legends held by the locals of the time, both children and adults alike, have been the subject of at least one novel. The Finedon ‘Dutch Doll’. It’s horrible.

Thoroughly good practice for a period of one hour daily ought to make you proficient as a pianoforte player, but you might add another half-hour without making yourself too great a nuisance to your neighbours.
