Thank you to the Middle Ground - Nepal Literature Festival for hosting two days of intense, open-hearted, emotional, & mind-expanding conversations in Berlin. I find it so moving & hopeful that “Nepal” can include Kashmir & Tibet & Bhutan & elsewhere in the world, all the way to Germany.

No one is allowed to photograph them, so take my word for it—Canada’s largest known site of petroglyphs is well worth a visit! (At the Petroglyph Provincial Park). Some are 6,000 years old. The park also has a rare meromictic lake, McGinnis Lake, with layers of water that don’t intermix. Very cool.

I'm always confused when people mistake writers for celebrities who lead glamorous lives when all we do, most days, is sit at a computer and write. Just as confusing is people mistaking us for experts on the topics we write about when the only thing we're trying to be expert at is writing. ✍️

Currently researching Native performers who were in Paris during the fall of France in 1940, and had to flee the fascists. Here is Molly Spotted Elk’s (Penobscot) 1903-1977, story: She was a vaudeville performer, cabaret dancer, and film actor. After performing in The United States, she moved to Paris in 1931, to experince Paris and perform in a more liberal society. There she met and married French journalist Jean Archambaud. Besides performing, Molly began to research and write her tribe’s history and returned to The States for a few years. In 1938, with war looming, she returned to Paris with her daughter, to be with Archambaud. The blitzkrieg invasion of France in 1940 forced her and her daughter to quickly leave Paris, likely by train though the rail system was soon shut down and somewhere along the way she and her daughter had to cross the Pyrenees, on foot, into Spain. Eventually they reached North America by boat. Molly would never see her husband again, as he died in 1941, possibly in a Nazi work camp. Molly spent the remainder of her life on the Penobscot Reservation in Maine.

I for one am very relieved to see Nepal's young new government take on the call for justice (environmental justice) in the face of the catastrophe of the Rasuwa flood. One call for justice leads to another. Legal, economic, and social justice are inextricably linked.

Unlike in the 2015 earthquake, the developed world is complicit in the catastrophic flood in Nepal this year. Nepal has met its climate commitments; the developed world generally hasn’t. They (including Canada) should pay for rescue and rebuilding. It’s time for climate justice.
