Before people learned music with 'do re mi', the sequence once began with 'ut' as the lowest note. The absolute lowest note recognised in medieval music was 'Γ ut', with the Greek letter gamma, and 'Γ ut' came to refer to the full range of possible notes. This is behind the phrase 'run the gamut'.

This is the best wikipedia entry I've read today.
A short piece of black text on a white background, an excerpt from the wikipedia page for the film Spontaneous Combustion (1990), directed by Tobe Hooper. The text reads:

"David grows up under the name Sam Kramer, now a thirty four-year-old instructor living in California. He occasionally bursts into flames whenever emotions run high."

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.

A cutaway view of a stone tower containing an elaborate water-powered medieval geared machine. Rising out of the machine is a rainbow-tinted, pixelated God with the robes, beard and all. To one side of this scene is a cluster of tiny people in Jesus-era robes, falling about themselves in religious ecstasy all over a stone staircase, atop of which stands a robed priest with his hands upraised. The background is a set of shining golden rays, emanating from pixel-God.

Terminator 2. I LOVED the first film and was at the cinema the day the sequel opened. The moment SuperJohn appears with the G&R soundtrack I was dumbstruck at the idea of a kids Terminator movie. Good effects and some nice moments, I'll give it that, but massively disappointing.

To be fair, if I'd had earphones in I wouldn't have heard a lad complaining about slow service in a takeaway telling his mate, "ah dunno, reckon they're back in the kitchen wankin' each other aff". Suffers in the retelling but sounded glorious in the moment in an annoyed Ulster accent.

Friday evening, you say?
A glass of red "wine" sits on a Blakes 7 coaster in front of a keyboard with white keys and a blue space bar. The bottle of "wine" can be seen on the right of the image, any resemblance to a plastic squash bottle is wholly correct as that's exactly what it is.

The "wine" is a home-brewed concoction of red grape juice, sugar, yeast and time. After a couple of weeks to mellow it's surprisingly drinkable but can only be described as "wine" (i.e. with the quotes) to avoid causing a diplomatic incident with France.

Still, at around £2 for a litre of the stuff, it'll do the job nicely. Economy in these trying times, etc.

Productive morning spent chopping 9 or 10 red onions (I lost count), making two jars for pickling and a bunch more for a chutney. Pickling onions now resting in brine for jarring tomorrow, chutney cooling to jar up later.
Photograph of a black glass stove top with two Kilner jars on the left of the image, filled with chopped red onions. A large pan on the right of the image contains a bubbling mix of more red onion, red wine, white vinegar, balsamic vinegar, sugar and a few chilli flakes being reduced to the consistency required for chutney. A well-used wooden spoon rests on the edge of the pan.

Quote with a ridiculous movie you think people should watch.
Poster for the movie Torque, featuring the stars of the film, Martin Henderson, Ice Cube and Monet Mazur and two motorcycles being ridden in a manner that would incur penalty points on your licence. Text at the top of the poster reads, "from the producer of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, S.W.A.T. and XXX". Note, the producer, not director or star or same universe so keep those expectations low.

It's basically an early Fast & Furious pastiche on bikes and the movie knows how daft that premise is and lives up to it completely.

Features an early credit for Adam Scott. He's very good at being Adam Scott in this.

Overall, it's brilliant, particularly the bike fight and the moment when they go off-road and the sports bikes magically turn into dirt bikes with plastics zip-tied on.

What's your sign?
Picture of a road somewhere in the UK countryside on a sunny day, on the left side of the image (and the road pictured) is a red sign with white text reading, "SIGN NOT IN USE".

This is a genuine road sign that according to the Highway Code "indicates that a sign ahead which is usually offering a variable message is not currently in use or is being testing". So that's perfectly clear, isn't it. Link below in case you still think it's bollocks.

The 1979 episode of 'Friday Night, Saturday Morning' where John Cleese and Michael Palin argued their point, (rather successfully, I thought), about the ludicrous controversy surrounding 'The Life of Brian', while Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark railed against them. 1979 John Cleese is still 1979 John Cleese, but Malcolm Muggeridge is now 2026 John Cleese. I guess the question his recent opinions have raised is whether Mr. Cleese has always been a bigoted bellend, or if he has simply developed a taste for bellendery in the intervening years.

🧵 So Farage is preemptively attacking the Commons standards committee in what's a great example of the weaponisation of the Four Pillars of Disordered Doubt against institutional authority to avoid accountability. The sort of thing Russia did against the OPCW, or Trump does with "fake news media"

In his Daily Mail interview, Nigel Farage also claimed that the Commons standards committee, which will impose a punishment if Farage is found to have broken Commons rules, was biased against him.

He said:

There are people on that standards committee who will judge me, who have reported me for Islamophobia. It is going to be a completely subjective judgment. There’s no objectivity in this.

According to Christian Calgie, who interviewed Farage for the Mail, Reform UK sources are describing the committee as a “kangaroo court”.

Allegations about MPs breaking parliamentary rules are investigated by Daniel Greenberg, the parliamentary commissioner for standards. He has confirmed that he is investigating the £5m donation. On Tuesday Farage implied undeclared donations from George Cottrell were also being investigated, and Greenberg is also being urged to investigate claims Farage broke lobbying rules.

In his speech on Tuesday Farage implied the standards inquiry was evidence of the establishment using “foul means” to defeat him.

But this is his most explicit attack on the standards committee – and it implies that Farage now believes he will be found guilty of a serious breach of Commons rules.

It is also a move that could see him facing a harsher penalty. The committee regularly imposes harsher punishments on MPs who have not cooperated with or respected the disciplinary process.

In a case with some parallels, Boris Johnson condemned the privileges committee as a “kangaroo court” before it published its final report into him. The committee (comprised of MPs who also serve on the standards committee) said Johnson’s criticism amounted to “a further significant contempt” and this contributed to it proposing a 90-day suspension – which it was not able to enforce because Johnson resigned as an MP first.

Part of a discussion with @igmansfield.bsky.social on why history teaching should *not* aim to inculcate "pride" (or, indeed, "shame"). And why citizenship is better served by recognising complexity and moral ambivalence, even in people and societies we might admire. bsky.app/profile/robe...
Let's take an example. I teach the women's suffrage movement, in which many students will take pride. Should I leave out the bit in the First World War where the Pankhursts start spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories about the "hidden hand" of Jewish finance - and demanding expulsions? Or...
aren't students better off knowing that people (& societies) are morally complex: that those they most admire can get things badly wrong & that antisemitism isn't just something Fascists do? Given recent events,I think that's a better contribution to citizenship than crying "Up the Suffragettes!"
The problem with promoting "pride" or "shame" is that these things are hopelessly entangled. If I'm proud of Alan Turing, I can't also be proud of those who drove him to suicide. I can be proud of Josephine Butler, but not of the child trafficking rings she smashed. I'm with Gladstone on this:
[Screenshot] Gladstone looked to history for inspiration & illumination; as he put it in 1887, "No greater calamity can happen to a people than to break utterly with its Past". But he had little patience with "timorous" histories that looked only for the good bits:
"Our judgement on the age that last preceded us should be strictly just. But it should be masculine, not timorous; for, if we gild its defects and glorify its errors, we dislocate the axis of the very ground which forms our own point of departure".
As Gladstone understood, we do not honour the past by stopping our ears to the parts we don't like. History is not made by gods & monsters, but by human beings, who are constructed, like all of us, out of "the crooked timber of humanity". We can honour Churchill's war record, or Gladstone's progressive reforms, or the suffrage activism of the Pankhursts, without suppressing the darker impulses to which they, like us, were subject. We might even draw inspiration from the knowledge that remarkable things are achieved, not by plaster saints, but by people as flawed and fallible as ourselves.

Josh O'Connor, on the incredible performance note he got from Steven Spielberg while shooting Disclosure Day apnews.com/article/disc...
AP: Do you have a favorite Spielberg story?
O’CONNOR: I have the greatest, in my opinion, the greatest Steven Spielberg story. When it happened, I was sort of like punching the air for this very reason, knowing that when it comes to doing press for this film, I can tell the story, which is that I was halfway through the shoot and we had a scene coming up, which is quite an emotional scene and I was struggling with it. I was in my hotel room trying to prep it, as Steven does so brilliantly, and it’s extraordinary he’s so available to talk about these things.

I reached out to Steven, we discussed the scene, we talked about the emotion of the scene and how to access that and what we’re ultimately aiming to show in the story. And I felt quite satisfied, but not completely with it. And then I got a text from him quite late at night, just saying ,“The door is on the latch, just push.” And it made so much sense. I was like, “of course.” The character’s kind of got all this emotion, it’s built up and it’s like a door on the latch and you just push and it all comes out and it’s an emotional release. I was so thrilled with that note and I came in the next day and said, “Steven, you totally unlocked it for me that was amazing.” And he was like, “What are you talking about?”

I said, “The text about ‘the door on the latch just push’ it’s incredible.” And he laughed and said that that text was supposed to be for his wife. It became a very big joke for all of us. But it did unlock the scene for me, so, fair play.

In the very early days of BBC radio, all drama was experimental. From 1926, this one-man dramatic sketch, or "palpitating proteologue", is considered so revolutionary that the Radio Times provides listeners with a "mind picture" to help them visualise the scene.
