Happy (or at least paused despair?) #MolluscMonday! This species shows some extreme sexual dimorphism. Not only is the gorgeous webbing (blanket) only found in females, but the males are teeny tiny. Inspired by pcaiger's Robson's blanket octopus observation on inaturalist. #MolluskMonday #sciart

Reminder: sci-comm and outreach costs money, and it’s being defunded across all STEM fields. It’s not just something scientists “do” (or fail to do, or need to do more). I mean, most of us do “do” it on our own time too, but that will never be enough.

Our chromosome-scale genome assembly of Nanomia septata, a siphonophore - doi.org/10.1101/2025... . Much larger than many other cnidarian genomes, fewer chromosomes, and highly rearranged. No smoking gun for how they achieve complex colony-level organization. Great work Namrata Ahuja and friends!

Piglet squid - Halicocrachia sp. Larva in egg case This was one of several hundreds pulled up with a mat of Common gulf weed (Sargassum natans) sw of Bermuda. They were in strings of ~50 per string. Shot w/ a 5:1 macro lens. Actual size of ea. individual egg casing ~1mm diameter🧪🐙🦑🐡 #molluscmonday
Tiny squid larva spotted all over a translucent body with pink tint to right (mantle) side two tiny eyes on opposite side and short stubby tentacles poking out to left. Size is 1mm inside a transparent egg case.
