When we engage in dehumanizing language and behavior it’s easy to see it as an ‘us versus them’. It’s easy to forget the humanity of strangers. I hurt today for the tax funded murder of a man who could have been my own loved one, but who WAS absolutely someone’s loved one.

A whimsical hand-drawn character portrait art by the artist Dhiyanah Hassan. A brown femme person with long wavy hair has their eyes closed with a slight smile on their face, as if meditating or dreaming. They are wearing a green top, golden necklace with a turquoise gem, and a golden nose ring. The ends of their hair is colored pale turquoise and glowing with its own light. Around their head is a school of green neon tetra fish, illuminated with the same light as their hair. The portrait is against a flat teal background.

A much needed and relevant book that shows that a lack of understanding the past leads to a tragic repeat of our own monstrous mistakes as a country. It’s so important to learn about the perspectives of those outside yourself so that the fear of the unknown becomes compassionate understanding.
