So cool to see a cuttlefish mimicking a pancake 🦑📷Chris Isaacs (inaturalist.ca/observations...)
A European Common Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) exhibiting the "disruptive" pattern. It is sitting on some black pebbles that are about as big as the cuttlefish. There a some light brown pebbles to the side. The cuttlefish is facing away from the camera. The cuttlefish is showing a pattern that contains white square in the middle of its mantle. The rest of its skin is a mix of dark and light brown that looks like sand.

Bigfin squids (genus Magnapinna) have a reputation for being eldritch looking creatures, but that's mostly from some low res footage where they are just floating with their arms dangling. When you get see them swimming, they look like a regular squid shaped squid, if you ignore their noodley arms.
A bigfin squid (genus Magnapinna) swimming above the deep sea floor. Its head, mantle and upper arms look like a typical squid, but it has two massive fins that are much larger than its body, and its lower arms are long, thin tendrils that are several times the length of the rest of the squid. Its lower arms look like strings dragging behind. The squid is a pale beige with white lower arms and slightly translucent fins. The seafloor is a mix of sediment and sediment covered rocks.

Austin @brachioteuthis.bsky.social is talking about brachioteuthids (a type of deep sea 🦑 ). He’s trying to figure out how we can more easily tell the difference between species. He taught us about some …unique! suction cup morphology. Just on the males, on the hectocotylus, they have a…um. EPS.

This is ultimately a photo of a predator having successfully caught its prey, but I can't stop from thinking it looks so goofy. Its like the crustacean is yelling "Let me at 'em!" but the pygmy squid is holding it back. It probably helps the goofiness that they are both so tiny.
A Two-toned Pygmy Squid (Idiosepius pygmaeus) holding a crab like crustacean in its arms. The pygmy squid has itself glued to a branching sea plant. The sea plant is black with a purple tinge and has a bunch of dark yellow frilly things sticking out of it. The pygmy squid is attached to the sea plant at its mantle. The pygmy squid translucent, and have a yellow colour with tiny black spots all over. Its eyes are silvery with some iridescent cyan on top. The crustacean is grasped within its arms, and the crustacean is helplessly reaching out with all its limbs. The crustacean is a very light pink colour and a bit translucent.
