Yesterday the FTC announced a historically large settlement and fine leveled against Amway. But the agency came short of calling it a pyramid scheme and left the business model largely intact. Sigh: www.ftc.gov/news-events/...

My book argues that there is no meaningful evidence that multi-level marketing companies like Mary Kay operate differently from pyramid schemes. In fact, that have the same origins. And they are a right wing, anti-labor, anti-democratic ideological project. Invented by a eugenicist, no less!

Then I sign in to my iCloud. I know I turned off the automatic photo backup after an unpleasant incident a few years ago when I opened my laptop at work to see my own nude, taken on my phone, on the computer screen. But I hadn't thought about iMessage: When I click the little green icon with the chat bubble, a store of 700,000 stares back at me, texts going back at least a decade. I begin imagining everything they might contain, the pieces of myself that, taken out of context, will certainly look nasty, mean, or criminal: a biting comment made in anger about my sister, vented to my boyfriend.
A joke he and I routinely like to make during his tourist-filled morning commutes about wanting to "detonate the vest" in Rockefeller Center. As I sit there spiraling, a co-worker Slacks me that she wants to murder one of our colleagues.

a lot going on, but this right here is the real battle for the soul of America: hideous, grasping influencer grifters who at least do something approximating "work" vs pure, unadulterated nepobaby oligarchy naturally, the latter seems to be winning www.thecut.com/article/broo...
What’s undeniable is that in the battle of oligarchy versus fame, Brooklyn is betting on oligarchy. Hustling for likes and sponsorships isn’t what it used to be. His own parents know very well that maintaining celebrity today is an exhausting, ceaseless game, even at the top. Why else would people as beloved and famous as they are still have to film Uber Eats ads referring to their glory days? Shill fruit snacks in Target? What a relief it must be for Brooklyn to land somewhere none of it really matters. The Peltzes are so rich that they can just pay for it all — reviews, financial success, or public adoration doesn’t make or break what Nelson’s heirs decide to do with their lives. Nicola has two more movies financed by her own company, Bunny Films, in the pipeline, in which she plays a ballerina and a beauty influencer. Brooklyn has registered a restaurant, Beck’s Buns, which, according to the trademark application, could also offer merch, online entertainment, and NFTs.

never thought of it this way but damn, Mormon culture is basically engineered for social media
clip from the quoted article that reads:

"Mormonism’s mimetic culture, a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses competitiveness, is instilled in members from a young age. All Mormons are taught to demonstrate “worthiness”; only those deemed worthy can get married in a Mormon temple and live forever in eternity with their families. (The least worthy will spend a millennium in a temporary hell called “spirit prison.”) Starting at age 12, they are summoned to interviews with their bishops in which they’re asked about their spiritual commitment, good works, prayer, and chastity. This constant striving for worthiness creates a norm of community surveillance; at church-funded Brigham Young University, students are encouraged to report each other for honor-code violations like drinking or having premarital sex."
