Update: Sen. Ron Johnson shutdown the UC effort, blocking the Dem effort. He said he was “happy” to reject the UC request, claiming both that the Impoundment Control Act is poorly written and that the pocket rescission request from the White House was not big enough

Filing day today. Even after everything, I still get the good kind of chill down my neck at the enormity of filing an official brief or statement or letter with my signature on it and saying "I'm filing this on behalf of the United States Railroad Retirement Board."

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

It's hard to imagine a serious effort to fix the federal government that doesn't include court reform. This is not a generic point about bad faith judges. Successful political reform will require the root-and-branch elimination of interlocking con law doctrines that choke off legislative innovation

I think something to consider here is that Collins voted to confirm Russ Vought as OMB Director despite the fact that he said a billion times that he thought Trump had a constitutional right to illegally impound funds, and now she’s doing shocked Pikachu reactions.

Without warning or consultation, Congress just received an $810 million package of pocket rescissions from the Administration. This is the most recent attempt by this Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to undermine Congress's Constitutional power of the purse.
This move shows that OMB intentionally withheld these funds for months to execute this unlawful cancellation of appropriations that were approved on a bipartisan basis and signed into law.Not only is the delay itself an impoundment that was not reported to Congress, but also it is a usurpation of Congress's appropriations powers.
OMB is an agency of the executive branch. It does not get to decide which programs are worth funding.
The independent Government Accountability Office has concluded that pocket rescissions are unlawful and not permitted by the Impoundment Control Act. Any effort to rescind appropriated funds without congressional approval is a clear violation of the law.
I will work with my colleagues to address these illegal actions.

Over the past year, we’ve been telling you about what is happening to Springfield’s Haitian community, and about the extraordinary people there who have stepped up to help their friends and neighbors through an incredibly difficult time. Now we’re asking the Bulwark community to step up with them. We’re raising money for the Haitian Support Center, which is on the ground in Springfield helping families with food, transportation, legal assistance, and other basic needs.

Russ Vought just sent a rescissions request to Congress, signaling he intends to illegally impound funds. The $810 million highlighted in this “request” (but this is a pretext to just illegally impound the funds) is not the exhaustive list of many billions of dollars he’s impounding this year.

Headed out to give this paper to the Ribstein Law & Econ Workshop at George Mason. Law & Econ can mean a lot of things (A LOT!), but for me it’s about a willingness to consider how incentives shape how people craft law and react to law.

I appreciate that, and you included it in the first thread, but I think this implies it’s just people with pesky social ties / rent seekers standing in AI’s way as opposed to (what I see as) a fundamental unfitness for AI and some (not all!) tasks (I refer to law here but I’m sure it translates).
