Look at at the faces on these chess figures! Carved out of walrus ivory and whale teeth, probably around 1200 AD, they were discovered on the island of Lewis in Scotland in 1830 and originated most likely from Norway (medieval Norse era). My own, last week, #BritishMuseum, London #Lewischessmen

The timeless beauty of ancient glass! This Roman glass scent bottle is around 2,000 years old, yet its elegant design feels surprisingly modern! British Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a small Roman scent bottle made of cobalt-blue mould-blown glass in the form of a scallop shell. At the top it has a cylindrical neck with an out-turned rim. There is a thin, curved, handle either side of the neck. The top of each handle is attached to the neck, and the bottom is attached to the top of the scallop shell. Bottle dimensions: height 8.5 cm, diameter 5.2 cm. Dated AD 25-100. It is displayed on a circular, clear perspex (?) stand in a British Museum display case. The bottle was bequeathed to the British Museum by Felix Slade in 1869.

This gorgeous dragonfly - the king of insects, a flying dinosaur, the past’s gift to our now - was caught in a spider’s web in my house and I carefully disentangled his wings and placed him on the wisteria. Half an hour later I’m sad to say he is still here. I’ll keep you posted. But those colours…

Sunshine on water. It was glittery on the beach today, with clouds scudding at different heights in different directions and big waves. The life guards told us to swim between the flags because of rip tides - which was unusual. I hope you manage to get out in nature today, my friend. #Motherearth
