Just turned the house upside down looking for interview footage I took 20 years ago of legendary boxers. Most have sadly now passed, but I am passing it on to the families and might stick some up on YouTube Ken Buchanan Alan Minter, Henry Cooper. I still miss my old club. Times ABC in Islington.

Am pleased to say that my article on Newcastle’s postwar play streets has been published www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... It draws attention to how traffic engineers framed streets as too dangerous for children’s play but not dangerous enough to warrant infrastructural changes.
PLANNING PERSPECTIVES

'The freedom of the place during daylight hours': urban renewal and the fight over play streets in Newcastle upon Tyne, c.1955-1980
Sally Watson
School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
ABSTRACT
Newcastle upon Tyne's 1960s planning policy included play streets as a short-term measure in neighbourhoods intended for long term urban renewal. The sia as on treate a tess for shiere of lay in are as that a ked ten
environmental turn of the 1970s, this article examines the circumstances surrounding the implementation and adaptation of this policy,
abandonment in 1974 and continuing resident activism following this. Based on municipal and government archives and local newspapers, it critically examines the moral landscape of play streets and the planning and traffic engineering policies and practices underpinning their governance. It shows that the demise of play streets was not due to a decrease in demand for them. Instead, a dominant 'car logic' contributed to constituting the child as out-of-place in the street. Factors including the transfer of play streets from planning to engineering,
reductions in traffic management budgets
following the 1973 oil crisis and a lack of national and regional government support would ultimately limit the possibilities they afforded. The article argues that ideas about the child and street play in this period cannot be divorced from evolving postwar planning and engineering policies and
practices.

Friday's thinly veiled analogy: I hate dogs when I am riding, and my daughter is terrified of them, but I don't want them banned because they promote activity and increase people's health and well-being. I accept that society is not about meeting my needs but addressing everyone's needs inclusively.

Being enabled to walk, ride a bike or use public transport to get to work or school is a human right and not a nice to have. I wish we could all start from a position of enshrining this first and foremost then factor in more convenient and damaging options.

I am not sure that guardrail goes with implied roundabouts and crossings. I had to sprint out of the way of a bus whose driver was clearly not psychologically persuaded to slow down. Go all in if you are going to go,I reckon, or signal control it.
Implied roundabout and coloured crossing point in the same materials as the footway. Guardrail to shepherd people to the non respected crossing places.

An interesting question came up today about exit gaps from protected bike lanes. Original Spanish spec was 2.5m max between intermittent protection, but I set that as a min under the motto "Protect don't trap." A long continuous strip can be a real pain to exit from.

Reflecting on my statement at the innovations conference that we need standardisation rather than standards for street design to make sure we get all the accessibility details right. I want to deliver on this promise soon. Geometric alignment is the art, but street components should be pure science.

A glimpse of life BBSB (before bus stop bypasses) footways pretending to be cycle tracks next to acres of road space. Dink around the back into narrow conflict. BSBs and SBBs were designed to end this common situation and improve accessibility and safety for all.
A footway with a blue dashes centre line marking leading to a bus stop shelter with a very narrow route around the back. Wide carriageway lanes with space for separation of modes.
