On October 10, 2018, my temporary mentor Greg Stafford died. Every year, I post my tribute to him. He was the best, I miss him, and I owe him nearly everything even though our direct connection was brief. porchhammer.blogspot.com/2018/10/greg...

RIP Matt Howarth. I was a huge Howski fan for such a long time, and although I've not been following him for a while now, this is sad news. He was a very distinctive voice, and a great fan of interesting fringe music. bleedingcool.com/comics/matt-...

I got this set early through the crowdfunding release, and I'm currently halfway through the second book. Kudos to @shannonappelcline.bsky.social and @evilhat.bsky.social - the books are beautifully produced, clearly a labour of love, and compulsively readable.

Designers & Dragons Origins is in your FLGS, at @drivethrurpg.com, and at Evil Hat today. This is the culmination of almost 13 years of work! DriveThruRPG contracted me in December 2012 about signing an NDA for a mystery project. It turned out they'd gotten rights to produce PDFs of old D&D books!

We could swap. My set if partially punched, so you can have that, punch the rest, and play the nice version, and I can have your unpunched set and sit looking smug. Your gut reaction to this plan should tell you which way to go!

The obscure Gloranthan forums are full of people who've read all the lore but seem never to actually play a game there. They see the world as a puzzle to solve, not as a world to explore. And for the most part, I think they really don't 'get it'.

Brian Duguid @brianduguid.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Published scenarios are sometimes the residue of that 'bottom-up' world-building, showing things that you just don't get from the top-down, birds-eye, categorical approach. Take Glorantha: all its many encyclopaedias full of facts do little to reveal what the world is actually *like*.

Brian Duguid @brianduguid.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I have a different view. People reach for adventures because they show how a setting can be brought to life - how it works in a way that will never become apparent from reading endless pages of dusty lore. That's how many RPG settings were first 'discovered' or 'revealed' - through play.

The book assembles several texts from long out-of-print sources; texts from other books previously published on the Jonstown Compendium; and several that are previously unpublished, many of which have been written specially for this volume. I'm especially pleased there are several "new" authors.

I use a Calendar in my Gloranthan games. It's no different to a terrain map: it encourages coherence, and it gives the GM and player context to build from. There are some weirdos who dislike the Gloranthan fan approach to the calendar, presumably they also hate using maps in their games ;-).

QuestWorlds does award XP only for failures (or for any contest where the chance of success is hindered by a flaw). Players are always incentivised to allow their characters to fail.

Brian Duguid @brianduguid.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
QuestWorlds does not do that. One of the versions of HeroQuest did encourage the GM to manipulate challenges to give a pass / fail rhythm.
