Because Mason was convicted of a criminal offense while on supervised release, she returned to federal prison for 10 months. INT WEST'S HOUSE - DAY

Holden, the girls, and Sachs work to clear out a room Holden
was using for storage. As they clear out various boxes and
other detritus, then dust and vacuum, the lighting shifts
into late afternoon.

Holden sets up a twin bed frame and an old mattress, which
Rebecca tries. She sinks into it comically. Holden and the
girls laugh. Amara, Eyra, Xalisi, and Penda turn to leave.

AMARA
We'll get dinner started, Father.

Holden nods as they exit.

HOLDEN
We'll get you a new one in the
morning. Is that okay?

Rebecca makes a show of climbing out of the bed. Holden
offers her a hand, which she takes gratefully.

REBECCA
It's fine. I've slept on desert rock
before when I was stationed in Mosul.

HOLDEN
Shit, you were in Mosul?

REBECCA
82nd Airborne. 2nd Brigade under
Colonel Work.

HOLDEN
Well damn. When were you there? Mosul
was my first overseas assignment back
in the early aughts. 24th Infantry,
Bravo Company. Battle of Mosul. I
fought at Yarmuk Circle.

REBECCA
Damn, you were Deuce Four? And you
not only survived, you still have all
of your original parts?

HOLDEN
Well, not all of them.

He pulls the corner of his mouth back with a finger to show
one of his molars, which he points to.

HOLDEN (cont'd)
That's an implant. Cracked the tooth
down to the root on a seed in a piece
of rye bread.

Holden grins as Rebecca laughs.

REBECCA
Where's your Purple Heart?

HOLDEN
I'm sure the paperwork will go
through any day. How about you? Am I
looking at a fully original antique?

REBECCA
Excuse me? Antique?

HOLDEN
Well, for cars, anything older than
twenty to twenty-five years is
considered antique. You're what,
twenty-seven? Twenty-eight?

REBECCA
Nice save.

HOLDEN
You like that?

He grins and she laughs.

REBECCA
I'm thirty-six. And yes, I have all
of my original parts. Though I was
82nd, my First Sergeant didn't let me
do a lot. Apparently, I have tits,
and that means I'm unable to do the
same job as people without them. I
was there in 2017. Helped retake the
city. My First Sergeant didn't have a
choice on that. It was an all-hands-on-deck operation.

HOLDEN
Ugh, yeah, that was one bad thing
about the Army. I'd love to introduce
your First Sergeant to these girls.

REBECCA
You're proud of them, aren't you?

HOLDEN
Absolutely. They're rock stars.
What's not to be proud of?

REBECCA
It's nice that they have someone like
you they can look up to. Listen,
Holden, I hate asking you this
question, but it's part of my job.
You haven't...taken advantage of any
of them, have you?

Holden manages to look both offended and understanding at
the same time.

HOLDEN
Absolutely not! I found these girls
in that zoo out there when they...
changed. They were little girls. I
raised them, taught them, took care
of them. I watched them grow into the
amazingly capable young women they
are now. They're my daughters. Not
biologically, obviously, but...in
every way that matters.

Rebecca nods.

REBECCA
Okay. I'm sorry, but my job requires
me to ask. We've run into some
Awakened sponsors that...have done
those things.

Holden looks disgusted.

HOLDEN
I understand. And I hope those
sponsors do serious jail time. But
no, it would never even cross my mind
to do something like that.

Rebecca looks relieved.

REBECCA
Okay. Good.

HOLDEN
Listen, I'm gonna go help them with
dinner. Let you get settled in here.
Maybe after dinner you'd like a tour
of the zoo? The girls and I love
walking through it at night.

REBECCA
(nods)
Sounds like fun.

Holden exits as Rebecca starts unpacking.
