Good start to the day talking Conservatives and civil society thanks to @probonoecon.bsky.social. Stuart Andrew wants regular engagement with the third sector - suspect we want the same! #PBEevents

The basic problem with "ancestry" as the basis for identity is I literally wasn't alive then. I'm an Essex Boy, English, and British because it's literally all I've ever known

The explanation from @pjtheeconomist.bsky.social implies significant long-term benefits of working at 17/18. Anyone know a good Lit Review on this question?

Initial reaction to @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social speech at @csjthinktank.bsky.social - there's very little in it that I couldn't imagine Michael Gove saying

Housing, transport, health and education. Arguable the principal four sectors for any economy, all more expensive than the OECD average. And if that turns you to drink, I've got even worse news ...

AI Action Plan day is a good time to remind people of some @thenfer.bsky.social research from before Xmas - ChatGPT reduced lesson planning time by 31% with no noticeable reduction in quality

My biggest weakness? Buying festive products at 75% discount. Next year's Christmas crackers sorted, and I have enough chocolate to last until Easter (when I will then buy three months worth of chocolate the week after Easter)

One of the main things I notice about employment rights is that many of the working-class folk I know were neither granted or aware of those rights, & many of the middle class folk I know assumed that rights were universally known & granted.
A screenshot of an excerpt from the piece to which the post links. It says “Efforts to tally up specific breaches point to problems on a breath-taking, and under-addressed, scale. According to the Government’s own estimates, 365,000 workers were paid less than the minimum wage to which they are entitled – and yet HMRC only uncovers around a third as many individual cases, and imposes penalties in fewer still. Many other supposedly well-established ‘day one’ rights turn out to be hard to cash in: 900,000 workers report receiving no paid holiday; 600,000 who were meant to be automatically enrolled in a pension that the employer chips into, had not in fact been so; and an astonishing 1.8 million don’t get the payslip they are entitled to, in order to check they are getting what they’re due.”

I can sort of understand rubbernecking at a semi serious accident being your immediate reaction - but why does 2% of the population have a real problem with being politely encouraged to give an injured person some privacy?

Very good thread. I'd note this focuses primarily on *output* targets for public services (waiting times, exam results etc.] Of course what we (politicians, public) are really interested in are *outcomes* [health of the population/ourselves, education quality, incomes] But.. [1/2]

Today, the govt has confirmed National Funding Formula allocations for schools in England An extra £2.3bn was announced in the Autumn Budget. About £1bn is going on high needs. The rest is going on mainstream schools, but the funding rises probably won't cover schools expected costs next year 🧵
