Someone had a 13/10 day. Nico got to swim for the first time in two years. He also got to play keep the Wuba away from the humans. The only downside was having to have a bath afterwards.

I wasn’t going to even try to take any photos of the eclipse this past Thursday, but one thing lead to another. After settling onto a lens I thought worked OK, I ended up taking over a hundred pictures. I did very cursory editing on a few. These are my favorites so far.

While going from state park to state park in our 30 hour “DCNR America’s 250th geocache/State Park Passport Stamp” tour we embraced our old car gps, circa 2016. Neither of our phones had service in a lot of northern central PA but the old school gps worked. Still had a propensity to pick cow paths.

PSA-wear your SPF50 lip sunblock/balm. Went to a dermatologist for the first time in years, at least since pre-pandemic shutdown. Had two pre-cancerous spots on my scalp (aka my bald spot) frozen. Also got a biopsy of a spot on my lower lip. For reference, I’m 56 and work in theater(not much sun).

Just got back from an amazing week spent in South Dakota with my wife and another couple. Spent the first two days in Badlands NP, which was breathtaking. Totally different environment than Western PA. Then we went to Custer, SD with a side quest to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming.

What do you do when the hotel the theater lobby passes under has a fire alarm? You evacuate all 1200 patrons and the performers, for roughly 20 minutes. It felt like longer, though. We restarted roughly 30 minutes after the alarm went off. It’s going to be a long night.

Nothing like having to make an impromptu dishwasher repair after Christmas dinner. Slow drip at the supply line connection. I’ll replace the line Saturday when I actually have time to deal with it. Other than that, an overall good day with my wife and daughters. Good food and family togetherness.

Tried making a cake this morning while we were waiting for the 23yo and her boyfriend to arrive. I deflated the egg whites when I tried folding them in, so it’s very thin. We have hundreds of cookies so I’ll make it again after Christmas. Just thankful to have the kids here for the day.

Since the RnRHoF induction, I’ve been thinking a little about Warren Zevon. By all accounts, he wasn’t a conventionally nice person but he was an amazing composer and musician. I’ve always loved his music and I appreciate what he produced while he was alive.

We got our tree on Monday. Tonight we added lights and ribbon. Also hung a garland in the opening between the living room and the next room over(I never know what to call it. My wife put up the battalion of nutcrackers Thanksgiving week. It’s slowly beginning to look like the holidays.

Yesterday’s drive east across the PA Turnpike was probably the worst we’ve had in years. Driving rain almost the entire time with tons of road spray and fairly heavy traffic. Paired with doing it in a rental suv that we’re not used to, it sucked. I was exhausted when we got to my MIL’s.

I have survived Friendsgiving 2025. We had 8 other adults in our house and no one burst into flames and no one’s feelings got hurt, including mine. It was a wonderful time with great friends and good food, laughter, and commiseration over the state of the world.

Made an Apple Cider Doughnut Cake cake today, recipe from Serious Eats. Failed to prep the Bundt pan enough and the top stayed in the pan when I inverted it. It’s just for us so it doesn’t really matter, but we all agreed I’d be in danger of going home if it was even week 1 of GBBO.
