"One justice even wondered if the saints could be compared to a sports mascot like Gritty of the Philadelphia Flyers." Thank you @massterlist.com @gintautasd.bsky.social for the heads up about this @allyjar.bsky.social @wbur.org article: www.wbur.org/news/2026/05...
Screenshot of text from the WBUR article:
" Is there any precedent for a major piece of public art being done like this?" he asked Davis. "Usually there's tons of process, right? Art is controversial in general, right? People have strong views. That's got to be a factor to consider."

Davis said the way the art was selected does not affect the central religious freedom question at the center of the case.

Meanwhile, Justice Elizabeth Dewar questioned Rossman on whether St. Michael and St. Florian are "essentially the mascots in kind of a sports team way, of police and firefighters all across the country of every different religion." She compared the saints to Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers' googly-eyed mascot.

"Are you saying that the well is poisoned because [these symbols] originally came from a religious tradition?" Dewar asked.

The justices also asked how a 1979 SJC ruling allowing for prayer in the State House would affect the statues' constitutionality. Kafker noted that St. Michael and St. Florian have "long-term meaning."

This letter from @brendanjkearney.bsky.social of @walkmass.bsky.social notes that while more regulation is needed for things like e-motos, our state has not made progress on other measures that would have an even larger impact on the safety of pedestrians and micro-mobility users.
More should be done to make streets safer for all
Drs. Natalia Barron Cervantes, Cassandra M. Kelleher, and Peter T. Masiakos highlighted an important safety concern in their Nov. 27 op-ed, “Massachusetts laws haven’t kept up with e-bike technology, and children are paying the price.” The authors recommend a number of regulations they’d like to see the Legislature enact.

At the end of 2024, the Legislature established a Special Commission on Micromobility, which has met five times this year. A report is due out soon, with findings that may require lawmakers to act to make streets safer both for people using micromobility devices and for pedestrians.

I would also note that removing the fastest and heaviest micromobility devices from sidewalks and trails across the Commonwealth would improve safety for people walking, running, and enjoying parks and trails, but there is more to do to improve mobility and safety for everyone. After all, the majority of fatal and serious crashes in Massachusetts involve automobiles. Users are often on sidewalks because streets are dangerous. We need to do everything we can to slow speeding drivers down, such as allowing municipalities to opt in to road safety cameras. Lawmakers should pass proposed legislation that would do that.

Something I often talk about is the need for media outlets to put conversations about e-bike safety and regulations in the context of the larger danger on our streets: cars. The Boston Globe published two letters to the editors that do this well. I'll thread them below.

Becoming a U.S. citizen takes years and involves immigrants acquiring a green card, extensive interviews, background checks, classes and a citizenship test. The naturalization ceremony is the final step to the process, where the oath of allegiance and a citizenship certificate are granted.
Immigrants approved to be naturalized went to Faneuil Hall Thursday - known as the country's cradle of liberty - for that long-awaited moment to pledge allegiance to the United States. But instead, as they lined up, some were told by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that they couldn't proceed due to their countries of origin.

Glen Powell would brave a brutal Massachusetts winter as Henry Knox in “Noble Train of Artillery” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noble_t...
Screenshot from linked Wikipedia article:

The noble train of artillery, also known as the Knox Expedition, was an expedition led by Continental Army Colonel Henry Knox to transport heavy weaponry that had been captured at Fort Ticonderoga to the Continental Army camps outside Boston during the winter of 1775-76. Knox went to Ticonderoga in November 1775 and moved 60 tons of cannon and other armaments over the course of three winter months by
boat, horse, ox-drawn sledges, and manpower along poor-quality roads, across two semi-frozen rivers, and through the forests and swamps of the lightly inhabited Berkshires to the Boston area, covering approximately 300 miles (500 km). Historian Victor Brooks has called Knox's exploit "one of the most stupendous feats of logistics" of the American Revolutionary War. The route he took is now known as the Henry Knox Trail.
