Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Being in production with live traffic or live library downloads is a shorthand way of saying “I am responsible to my team and my users.” 

Any decisions around the presence or absence of unit tests, integration tests, metrics dashboards, CI/CD or code review should be viewed through the lens or “is what I am doing creating a stronger or weaker contract between me and my team and my users?”

back when i worked in a flight search engine, almost two decades ago, we regularly had problems showing correct prices for tickets it turns out that the architect had implemented "child price = adult * constant" and had the same constant across all flights and airlines but no one had noticed
