if i were the Democrats i would quit waiting around hoping that their focus-tested version of Reacher shows up and punches guys, and instead be doing the work to get huge and become Reacher and punch guys myself. people love Reacher because he’s huge and punches bad guys!

The value of learning history is to not repeat ourselves. TAG (then known as the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists Guild) ‘79 and ‘82 strikes were an attempt to stop the bleeding of union jobs from LA studios, much like what we are fighting today. So what can we take away from that history? 🧵(1/14)

Jackie Chan's Police Story is a Christmas movie

Jackie Chan crouching on a silver railing in front of the escalators' upper landing. there is a curtain of vertical Christmas light strands in front of him (and one horizontal) and a couple of gold poles.

Jackie Chan after leaping onto one of the gold poles, clinging to it and about to slide down. this shot is from a different angle so it feels like we're looking up at him instead of head on. half the frame is the mall's ceiling, the other half is the curtain of warm white vertical Christmas lights.

another shot of the mall in a different space, with people in foreground to the left and in background in the center, with teal carpeted stairs to the right that lead to a display that announces MERRY CHRISTMAS over a short white fence. behind it is gifts and a giant rotund Santa.

a different angle of the same display, the giant Santa is now to the left, the stairs run horizontally across the center of the frame with presents on the top step and glittering green cutouts shaped like Christmas trees of various sizes behind them. two bad guys have grabbed Brigitte Lin, caption reads 'Come on!'

a little Saturday downtime reading. Bresson on filmmaking, or “cinematography” as he defined it. a few quotes from “Notes on the Cinematograph.” on himself:

Apply myself to insignificant (non-significant) images.

Flatten my images (as if ironing them) without attenuating them.

Rid myself of the accumulated errors and untruths. Get to know my resources, make sure of them.

The faculty of using my resources well diminishes when their number grows.

Master precision. Be a precision instrument myself.

i can’t tell you how many times i’ve heard some version of “why would artists at X studio in Canada want to unionize, they already get healthcare from the government?” it’s reductive and uninformed, but there is a grain of truth there. employer-tied healthcare is a millstone around all our necks.
