on conceiving a film:
A small subject can provide the pretext for many profound combinations.
Avoid subjects that are too vast or too remote, in which nothing warns you when you are going astray. Or else take from them only what can be mingled with your life and belongs to your experience.Dismantle and put together till one gets intensity.

Don't think of your film outside the resources you have made for yourself.

on technique:
No intellectual or cerebral mechanism.
Simply a mechanism.

If, on the screen, the mechanism disappears and the phrases you have made them say, the gestures you have made them make, have become one with your models, with your film, with you—then a miracle.

Unbalance so as to re-balance.

Hide the ideas, but so that people find them. The most important will be the most hidden. Not to shoot a film in order to illustrate a thesis, or to display men and women confined to their external aspect, but to discover the matter they are made of. To attain that "heart of the heart" which does not let itself be caught either by poetry, or by philosophy, or by drama.

a little Saturday downtime reading. Bresson on filmmaking, or “cinematography” as he defined it. a few quotes from “Notes on the Cinematograph.” on himself:
Apply myself to insignificant (non-significant) images.

Flatten my images (as if ironing them) without attenuating them.Rid myself of the accumulated errors and untruths. Get to know my resources, make sure of them.

The faculty of using my resources well diminishes when their number grows.

Master precision. Be a precision instrument myself.

ok fine, just one i.ytimg.com/vi/XVhHGnJ1V...
a grainy digicam video still of the band 311 on stage. in the center of frame is singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, wearing a white tank top and baggy jeans. he has platinum blond hair and is playing an electric guitar while he sings into the microphone in front of him. they’re probably playing their 1995 hit “Down.”

found this shiny guy during my last visit to my parents’ house. blasting a 108 CD. i was kind of shocked how terrible the bass boost mode sounded on this, but then i remembered i used to carry this in my cargo shorts pocket while cutting grass. not exactly an audiophile environment 😆

a side note i found interesting was the apparent cultural phenomenon of Werther. all the melodrama and moral panic of a modern viral tiktok challenge 🔩 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sor...
Wikipedia excerpt that reads, “It also started the phenomenon known as ‘Werther Fever,’ which caused young men throughout Europe to dress in the clothing style described for Werther in the novel. Items of merchandising such as prints, decorated Meissen porcelain and even a perfume were produced.”

Chapters XIV-XVI—our tall boy wasn’t kidding when he said this was the most moving part of his tale. rejection after rejection, fear and flight, followed by revenge and demand for restitution. 🔩
a black and white illustration by Bernie Wrightson, depicting the creature curled up into a ball in one corner of his hovel. his arms are crossed in front of his face, and he clutches pages from a book in one hand. other pages are scattered on the straw in front of him.a black and white illustration by Bernie Wrightson, depicting the creature, in the foreground and facing away from us, being shot in the shoulder by an angry man. this is the thanks the creature gets for rescuing a drowning girl!a black and white illustration by Bernie Wrightson, depicting the creature setting the De Lacey cottage on fire. he has been rejected and the family is never returning, so he exacts his revenge and pain on the structure.a black and white illustration by Bernie Wrightson, depicting the creature sitting alone on a river bank in the pouring rain. he is making his way to Geneva, heart full of revenge on his creator Frankenstein.

Chapter XIII—i guess the modern equivalent of this would be kind of like teaching someone about how the world works by reading them a Malcolm Gladwell book? 🔩
“The book from which Felix instructed Safie was Volney’s Ruins of Empires. I should not have understood the purport of this book, had not Felix, in reading it, given very minute explanations.”

screen cap pair of two shots from the 2010 film “Inception.” the top frame is an old-age makeup Ken Watanabe saying “I’m an old man-“ and the bottom frame focuses on Leo DiCaprio’s face while the line is finished: “filled with regret.”

Chapter XII—it only takes one quick chapter to put us completely on the creature’s side here: 1. stops stealing cottagers’ food when he figures out they’re poor 2. collects firewood for them 3. clears a path for them in winter snow 4. wants to learn to speak so he won’t scare them away later 🔩

Chapter XI—[INCEPTION BRAWWWW] at this point the book kind of feels like a dare to see how many levels deep in first-person framing stories we can go. MS’s telling of Walton’s written account of Victor’s oral retelling of the creature’s recollection of its first days of consciousness. 🔩

Letter IV is where the images from Bernie Wrightson’s graphic novel adaptation of the book start taking over what i can picture. i can’t think of more fitting illustrations for this story. 🔩 #HotFrankSummer www.thegutterreview.com/bringing-the...
