The Verve is great new housing, but man do they keep making biking to UVA worse. First it was closing the JPA bike lane, then removing the left turn lane to Stadium, now they've walled off access to bike parking.

Chicago is the worst city for walking I've ever experienced. Drivers there are very aggressive downtown and clearly fear no repercussions for anything they do.

Yeah just joking. Unless...more houses, more competition for maintenance contractors and materials? I'm grasping at anything to explain how more supply doesn't reduce prices.

Interesting! I wonder why more housing would raise their costs, because we know for sure that more housing wouldn't reduce what they can charge for rent.

Genuinely good news from @cvillecityhall.bsky.social. Let's do city schools next and, from there, how about a citywide ban on the non-electric kinds?

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

The downtown mall crossing at 4th St should be closed 10am to 4am. Everyday. Not just summer Friday nights and August 12th. When people are using the mall, cars (and delivery trucks) shouldn’t be, especially at the 4th St crossing.

One reasonable thing a potential applicant might ask is "how long did you commit to your previous strategic plan?" and realize UVA generations are apparently only 6-7 years.

Ok what is annoying about streets that work is that 5/6 of the street typologies have design speed specified by a maximum. Except downtown, which has a fixed design speed (i.e., 25 mph).

Brad Campbell @bradjc.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
After quite a bit of searching to find the Streets that Work plan, the mixed use A and B streets have a design speed "< 30 mph". So, the streets are already compatible, just they could have a 29 mph speed limit and still be with the design speed. www.charlottesville.gov/DocumentCent...

I was a bit confused about this part. He didn't mention all of the streets that have a speed limit lower than their design speed, and what the plan is for those.

Not only that, they know it's unsafe. They had a fully completed project and intentionally kept it closed last weekend. There was absolutely no construction-related reason to do so, they just chose to.

The Mall crossings are once again open & many drivers are once again failing to obey the stop signs or yield to pedestrians. The city should close them permanently—for public safety & for the symbolic statement that on the Mall, if nowhere else, people are more important than cars. But here we are.

Charlottesville seems like a place where the goal of city council is "maintain enough stability that there isn't a new city manager every six months" and, that's kinda it.
020
Brad Campbell @bradjc.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
Or, the city fully recognizes it is safer and better for downtown to have the crossings closed, but is choosing to allow vehicles on them anyway. If the crossings are critical to downtown's success, then surely they should be open during major events (like July 3) when many people will be downtown.

Brad Campbell @bradjc.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
I don't understand this: www.instagram.com/reel/DaEBGuC.... We have repaired crossings the city spent $850k on, but we're not using them? If it's safe, why not open them to vehicles? What changes on July 6?

Mayor Wade said no. "...will require a lot of public input that was not part of the current temporary closing. It could be something considered in the future, but not at this time." I don't know, maybe the construction goes long? Some future utility work means opening now is a waste of time?

I emailed city council to ask that the City run a year-long pilot to keep the crossings closed to vehicles.

Yeah, I think @jamellebouie.net put it pretty well: if you have a high risk tolerance you CAN bike. But recommending it...that's harder. Just today, road workers were setting up a construction sign right in the W Main bike lane. Just normal in Charlottesville.

I'd add lockers to this as well. At least in Charlottesville, where garage parking downtown is stupidly cheap (i.e., $1/hr), a major perk of driving is having a place to put your stuff. I like biking downtown directly after work, but having my bag with me isn't ideal.

Downtown Disney in Anaheim is one of the most confusing places. TONS of people drive to Anaheim to enjoy the pedestrian-only "downtown", where all the food is good, but quite expensive. Yet, apparently no one thinks "we could just have this at home where I live!" Or, "I want my Main St. car free!"

Also, I still cannot stress this enough, that sidewalk leads directly to an entire parking lot reserved ONLY for state and delivery vehicles 24/7. There are 8 open parking spots 40 ft away. This isn't a matter of not having somewhere to park.

Annnnd we're back. It's been a good year or two. New signs, better awareness, maybe my endless complaints made a big difference in keeping vehicles out of pedestrian areas near Engineers Way at UVA. But somehow the temptation always remains.

I share this opinion. What other travel questions should we answer? What flight do I take? What speed should I drive? Do I need two queen beds or one king? Which subway car should I ride in? You're an adult, just figure it out.
