No bike bus tomorrow. I’m done with testing the schedules, it’ll work. We’re going to officially launch in October, with a lot more advertising, maybe some official partners, and some free first-run Bike Cville t-shirts. The crosstown bike bus will happen on TUESDAY, starting 10/6

Vision Zero should be an internal framework guiding elected officials, traffic engineers, and public space managers to design a better and safer mobility system. If anything, the average citizen shouldn't know what Vision Zero is at all. (And it certainly shouldn't be a brand stamped on helmets.)

New study finds the social cost of driving a car 1 km—including pollution, crashes, infrastructure, and noise—is more than *triple* the private cost paid by the car owner. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

Back at it tomorrow morning, riding my bike back and forth across town. Come find me, for a fun ride, for your commute, or just to say hi

Late August thunderstorm that gives us just enough rain without knocking out the power while putting on a sweet light and sound show, no notes, I have a covered porch and this was my favorite tv show this month

No bike bus testing this week. I got a rough summer cold. Hopefully back at it next Friday.

Tonight a bar I haven’t been to in 3+ months handed me a pair of AirPods that I lost the last time I was there. Didn’t even recognize the bartender, but as soon as I walked in, he knew I had lost the AirPods that were sitting by themselves for months by the glasses behind the bar

I don’t know whether I want anyone to make a big deal over the speed limit on Melbourne Rd being dropped to 25 mph finally or maybe I should just let it happen and see how people naturally respond to new signage

The downtown mall crossing at 4th St should be closed 10am to 4am. Everyday. Not just summer Friday nights and August 12th. When people are using the mall, cars (and delivery trucks) shouldn’t be, especially at the 4th St crossing.

Oh boy there’s a flaw in my early morning Friday bike bus- Thursdays are usually the busiest, most exciting part of my week and it’s really hard to wind down to be ready for a 6:20 start time

The past few months, I've been tinkering with an idea for how to show people how to ride safely together across the City and provide a way to communicate detours for cyclists during the upcoming W Main utility work: a weekly bike bus on Friday mornings

We are in a blessed era of road cycling for spectators. It is a rest day of Tour de France and every team has a ton of behind the scenes YouTube videos. No need to wait for a documentary or clip show or Netflix series. Teams are competing for fans directly and it rules.

Finally had the time to finish Life After Cars. It covered a lot of material I was already very familiar with, but packaged it in the most accessible way I’ve seen yet. And the ending made me cry. I needed that pep talk.

Moved into our new house today and walked a couple blocks to a great restaurant and the owner saw me wearing a t-shirt about biking and started talking to me about cycling and I planted the seed that he should wheel in a tv and serve brunch and show big races

I cooked a boneless leg of lamb in a sous vide for three days and then smoked it with hickory for a half hour or so. It’s like a medium rare soft pate with a pastrami crust. Every bite I’ve taken has made me think to myself, no, don’t even think about starting a food truck, you have a job, stop it

Americans drive a lot more than people in other rich countries. If we didn’t drive so much, we wouldn’t die in so many crashes. It’s a simple point, but one that NHTSA, traffic engineers, and many road safety org’s have yet to learn. Me, in Bloomberg 🧵

The US Is Counting Traffic Deaths Wrong
By emphasizing the number of people killed per mile rather than deaths per capita, traffic safety groups risk normalizing the factors that make American roads so deadly.

I have reserved a spot in my small talk repertoire for asking if you’ve tried Lucky’s Cheesesteaks on the mall and how they serve lunch now and the other subs are actually what I order and the cheesefries are solid. So let’s knock that out first and plan lunch next time we talk.

My Saturday plans are morning biking, smoking a bunch of pork, watching a Belgian bike race, maybe watching some baseball, and celebrating a friend’s birthday party with a viewing of Jurassic Park. Spring is here, I don’t care anymore.

“If free buses strike you as wasteful, you’re not alone. Plenty of the beneficiaries would be people who can afford to pay. Does it make sense to give them a freebie? Yes, if it improves the life of the city, just as free parks, libraries and public schools do.” www.nytimes.com/2026/02/13/o...

I don’t need to coordinate with a leftist to know that masked ICE agents shooting fleeing people are in fact scared little fascists who should be documented, shamed, and prosecuted for murder, not brave or enforcing laws or under attack by anyone

Everyone’s excuse for why their Spotify Wrapped is messed up is that they play something as background music. Mine doesn’t account for what we listen to as background at home: live broadcast of FIP through the France Inter app. Probably the best radio station in the world.
