The Verve is great new housing, but man do they keep making biking to UVA worse. First it was closing the JPA bike lane, then removing the left turn lane to Stadium, now they've walled off access to bike parking.

Free covered parking is a pretty cool perk at UVA Health.

Ok what is annoying about streets that work is that 5/6 of the street typologies have design speed specified by a maximum. Except downtown, which has a fixed design speed (i.e., 25 mph).

@bench.bsky.social FYI I think "Mixed Use A" and "Mixed Use B" are flipped on this map.

I emailed city council to ask that the City run a year-long pilot to keep the crossings closed to vehicles.

This is civilized. Can we keep it this way?

Oh...wait. Just not using all the spots for optimal downtown parking or something.

Is this the most optimistic sign in Charlottesville?

Annnnd we're back. It's been a good year or two. New signs, better awareness, maybe my endless complaints made a big difference in keeping vehicles out of pedestrian areas near Engineers Way at UVA. But somehow the temptation always remains.

Steady progress on places for over a thousand people to live. Would you advocate they tear it down and replace it with a cottage and a handful of townhomes?
Construction of The Verve apartments. Built on a site that used to have a small cottage, a couple small apartment buildings, and a couple townhomes.

www.cvilletomorrow.org/fifeville-lu... I understand the concern, but this is street view in 2006, and aerial from 2002. No one else has figured out how to build housing there in over a quarter century.

What am I missing here? I've been to the whole foods in downtown DC. Is it surface parking? Or just too expensive to reconfigure?

How can Charlottesville charge so little for parking in the Water St garage? Don't they owe like $70M on it? Who's subsidizing this?

The Verve inadvertently created one of the best after-construction-hours protected bike lanes in the city, even if it is only one block.

Which Kroger exec/manager went shopping at Walmart and thought "well this is a far superior shopping experience, let's do it at our stores"?

Progress where I live after two days. At least I can walk on my own sidewalk that doesn't connect anywhere but hey rules are rules

I'm not a huge suburbs supporter, but I have to say they certainly understand snow removal way more than the city. Even the farthest parking spots are spotless at Barracks. Whereas I can't even get home because my street and sidewalks are impassable.

So I'm supposed to have my sidewalk cleared within 24 hours but the city doesn't even have to plow my street once in that time? I don't understand the double standard. #charlottesville

At the Darden Forum hotel. Clearly mandated bike parking designed by someone who has never biked. Front wheel in the bushes and no curb cut for access.

The Verve construction site closed all nearby bike lanes. Why? To ensure there was street space to park their own cars. And to store barrels.

Finally below the price at the election. It feels like the increase since last Nov wasn't based on anything real with the actual company. Drops in the share price from this point forward probably represent a more meaningful devaluing of the company.

Road in front of the Verve has been updated, but someone is going to have to explain to me what the point was. They moved the center line and added a white line. Oh and removed a bike lane in the process. It seems like they removed a bike lane to give cars more space.

Snow gives away where people actually want to walk.

Brad Campbell @bradjc.bsky.social · 13/02/2025
Thanks for doing that, but yeah nothing new. Seems obvious to me: just move the sidewalk to where people already walk in the road (red). They probably say "but that crosses our entrance" (blue), but I say that's better than the crowded car-centric crossing they chose (purple).

Such wishful thinking that spending $50M+ to allow more people to drive to UVA will then inspire those same people to not use their cars to go other places. www.cbs19news.com/news/a-guide...

Construction companies might be the urbanists we wish the city were. I'm watching outside my office window as Faulconer has created a sidewalk with concrete barriers, removed street parking, and closed what amounts to a slip lane.

Anything to avoid blocking a car lane in Charlottesville.
010
Brad Campbell @bradjc.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
Seems like it is a makeshift sidewalk for construction on the Verve apartment building. Classic Charlottesville: no aversion to using concrete on a road to create a protected bike lane, as long as it isn't for bikes, and when choosing to use a bike lane or car lane they sacrifice the bike lane.
010
Brad Campbell @bradjc.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
I don't understand. They seem to have accidentally created a protected bike lane, but then blocked bikes from accessing it? No signs, of course. This is at JPA and Emmet.
