The Verve is great new housing, but man do they keep making biking to UVA worse. First it was closing the JPA bike lane, then removing the left turn lane to Stadium, now they've walled off access to bike parking.

Chicago is the worst city for walking I've ever experienced. Drivers there are very aggressive downtown and clearly fear no repercussions for anything they do.

Genuinely good news from @cvillecityhall.bsky.social. Let's do city schools next and, from there, how about a citywide ban on the non-electric kinds?

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

The downtown mall crossing at 4th St should be closed 10am to 4am. Everyday. Not just summer Friday nights and August 12th. When people are using the mall, cars (and delivery trucks) shouldn’t be, especially at the 4th St crossing.

The Mall crossings are once again open & many drivers are once again failing to obey the stop signs or yield to pedestrians. The city should close them permanently—for public safety & for the symbolic statement that on the Mall, if nowhere else, people are more important than cars. But here we are.

I'd add lockers to this as well. At least in Charlottesville, where garage parking downtown is stupidly cheap (i.e., $1/hr), a major perk of driving is having a place to put your stuff. I like biking downtown directly after work, but having my bag with me isn't ideal.

Downtown Disney in Anaheim is one of the most confusing places. TONS of people drive to Anaheim to enjoy the pedestrian-only "downtown", where all the food is good, but quite expensive. Yet, apparently no one thinks "we could just have this at home where I live!" Or, "I want my Main St. car free!"

Annnnd we're back. It's been a good year or two. New signs, better awareness, maybe my endless complaints made a big difference in keeping vehicles out of pedestrian areas near Engineers Way at UVA. But somehow the temptation always remains.

I share this opinion. What other travel questions should we answer? What flight do I take? What speed should I drive? Do I need two queen beds or one king? Which subway car should I ride in? You're an adult, just figure it out.

It’s exciting to see the city’s investments in resident led affordable housing coming to fruition! Already accomplished: Crescent Hall renovations and phase 1 of both South 1st St and Kindlewood. Right now phase 2 of South 1st St and Kindlewood are underway, as well as phase 1 of 6th St.

Charlottesville's unwillingness to build new housing forces people to live in Ruckersville and drive in, which just means more demand for car-centric infrastructure and more space consumed by parking.

Steady progress on places for over a thousand people to live. Would you advocate they tear it down and replace it with a cottage and a handful of townhomes?
Construction of The Verve apartments. Built on a site that used to have a small cottage, a couple small apartment buildings, and a couple townhomes.

It would be helpful to have a term for legacy US automakers, which I assume what posts like this mean. It's hard to interpret these sentiments in light of Tesla, an American automaker. I'm not advocating for Tesla, but, their EV influence is undeniable.

I was going to share the same thing, Rory beat me to it. Good on Ben Chambers to vote no. It's stunning how little is needed for some to justify $24M of state money to widen roads. Some vague "safety" notes about weaving and slowing down.

If you're curious what happens when private equity runs a chain but doesn't immediately bankrupt it, check out the Staples on Ridge McIntire. Some unholy combo of discount office supplies, party city, and a UPS. First thing you see is a cardboard box of clearance backpacks, second is toilet paper.

Second day in a row getting to work shaken up after almost being hit by a car. One just blatantly turning left through a red light, the other turning right suddenly across the bike lane without looking. Hard to recommend anyone bike in Charlottesville.
