I checked out the digital comics shop and picked up The Poorcraft Cookbook for only one dollar. I wish I’d had this book up when I first started cooking! The section on reverse-engineering restaurant food would have put me in a much different place in my cooking journey.
The cover of The Poorcraft Cookbook, by Nero Villagallos O’ReillyPenny lists the basic spices and seasonings that belong in every pantry: salt, pepper, white sugar, and brown sugar. The Poorcraft girls outline basic cookware every kitchen needs. I still need a wooden cutting board…Penny begins to reverse-engineer a tasty restaurant sandwich.

Ballpoint pen, watercolor, colored pencil, a little crayon, and charcoal pencil.

Our guy pulls up deep in the forest on his 2-speed bike. He’s flanked by tall dark trees and his path is blocked by a massive spider. He lets the Big Fella know it’s on. “Big Fella,” he says. “I fixed my 2-speed. You still wanna race.” Reader, you know Big Fella wants in on that action. Next slide.Against a starry night sky we see silhouettes of Big Fella and our man racing down a hill. It’s unclear in the drawing who will win but Big Fella is likely about to pull away.

My history minor led me to take a single semester class dedicated to the American Civil War. That, and the African American literature class I took for my major, probably shaped my worldview more than anything outside Sunday School.

Reading Faulkner is fun, it’s like solving several mysteries on every page: Who is talking to who? Are they related, and if so, how? What actually happened while I was trying to figure out who was talking to who and whether they’re related?

Man, sometimes food is cool. From Jang: The Soul of Korean Cooking, by Minho Kang.
Embedded in the history of Korean fried chicken is the history of Korea in the twentieth century. First introduced by Black American GIs stationed in Korea during the 6-2-5 War, fried chicken has grown into a national obsession. What was once rare - even the affordable chicken was once out of reach of most Koreans, and cooking oil was too precious for deep-frying - has become one of our greatest culinary exports. Crunchy, salty, and sweet, Korean fried chicken is the most common anju, a genre of food (often fried) that is consumed while drinking. In fact, fried chicken goes by many names, one of which is chimaek, a portmanteau of chikin, meaning fried chicken, and maekju, beer. My favorite nickname for fried chicken, however, is Chisus - "chicken Jesus." That gives you an idea of how revered fried chicken is in South Korea.

First “older” bit of writing that I read and immediately understood to be funny was Pride and Prejudice. I read first Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, realized the book would probably be better without the zombies, and… yeah, it very much was.

There’s such an easy answer to this “gotcha” question and it’s “Sports are inherently unsafe and unfair and it’s ridiculous to single out trans athletes when we allow 150 pound linebackers to go up against 260 pound linemen in freshman football on a daily basis. Let kids play with their friends.”

I made ice cream for a buddy’s birthday last week. I got the ice cream making bug again. RIP my weight loss. This magic stuff is Liquid Cheesecake. Recipe by Salt and Straw. It creates a cheesecake “ribbon” in your ice cream. Gonna throw it in some blueberry and graham cracker ice cream later.

IMO, the perfect length for a show is 3 seasons. Most of my favorite shows either run too long (Gilmore Girls, MASH) or ended prematurely (Pushing Daisies). The Good Place is a weird exception in that it ran for five nearly perfect seasons and is the correct answer.

I feel like this must have been done at some point, response poems are a storied tradition, but anyway I wrote "Margaret, Bringing Fresh Flowers" today and thought I'd share
Uncle Gerard, do you remember how,
when I was a kid, you found me crying
and I told you it didn't seem fair how all the nice leaves
had to die in the winter when I loved them so much;
and you told me, well, it gets worse from here,
and besides, it's not really the leaves,
you're a smart kid, they'll be back next spring,
but in the meantime you're right of course,
all kinds of things are going to die
and die and die and die and die and die,
your whole life, and it doesn't get easier,
it gets harder, because eventually you realize
all those dead hands go down pointing a finger at you,
and that's actually why you're sad, see,
because in a sense you're next,
even if it takes a while for next to get here?
And do you remember
how I said, Jesus Uncle Gerry,
can't a person be sad for a tree sometimes,
just sad about a tree?
Well, anyway,
you were probably right,
and you know this already,
because I tell you this every time I come here
but I suspect it's harder to remember things
where you are now
so I'm telling you again,
just in case.

The takes are amazing. For every “The X-Men have outgrown the school,” there’s a “The X-Men don’t work without the school.” For every “The X-Men need to lean into soapy drama,” there’s a “The X-Men work better as adventure fiction than soapy drama.” And the best part is everyone is right.

On August 12, 1960, Dr. Seuss published what would become his biggest-selling book of all time. Written as the result of a $50 bet between Seuss and his publisher at Random House, Bennett Cerf, the book, by some estimates, has sold north of 200 million copies. The book? Green Eggs and Ham. /1

It’s a WILD time to be putting together slides for a presentation on preventive medicine. A lot of the AAFP/AAP guidance for preventive medicine simply restates federal guidance. So far the groups still mostly align, but that could change quickly and significantly.

I would LOVE a Mormon essay on Secret Wars. Heck, maybe I’ll write it. The notion that humans have the potential to become gods is a significant part of Mormon theology. In my life, I’ve encountered very few works of art that take the idea seriously. Outside superhero comics, that is.

Panel 1, one figure says to another:

“HEY, I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAD PLANS FOR --HOLY CRAP WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR APARTMENT?”

“I FILLED IT WITH PLAYPEN BALLS!”

“I... WHAT? WHY?”

Panel 2, the second figure responds:

“BECAUSE WERE GROWN-UPS NOW, AND ITS OUR TURN TO DECIDE WHAT THAT MEANS.”

Panel 3, the first stick figure thinks about what was said.

Panel 4, the first stick figure disappears, presumably into the ball pit.

I’ve taken my kids (both under 5) grocery shopping every week for years. They help me find the aisle numbers. They hold the produce and put it in bags. They pick out food they’re actually willing to try. They swipe the cards at checkout. AND they (usually) make the grocery clerks smile.

Jack Kirby.
Kirby, who grew up in Manhattan's rough Lower East Side, knew how to throw a fist and didn't back down from anyone-especially a Nazi. As Mark Evanier describes in his biography Kirby:
King of Comics, "....Jack took a call. A voice on the other end said, 'There are three of us down here in the lobby. We want to see the guy who does this disgusting comic book and show him what real Nazis would do to his Captain America. To the horror of others in the office, Kirby rolled up his sleeves and headed downstairs. The callers, however, were gone by the time he arrived." Based on everything we know about Kirby, these Nazi crank-yankers got lucky.
