I have never been so hurt by a single line as this description of cranberry pie lovers: “You dare not trust yourself to make the house pleasant with your wit and so you buy ice cream.“ Not even sure I’ve ever had cranberry pie, but still.
A photo of A Commonplace Book of Pie, by Kate Lebo. She is probably a lovely person, but I’d still rather not talk to her right now.

I would say I’m an amateur admirer of stickers and graffiti. Not knowing anything about local culture or scenes beyond what I glean from Reddit, I enjoy being baffled. Or, as is often the case, moved. Also, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy having some of my priors affirmed.
A poster of a blond man in a red tie (probably meant to depict Trump?). The caption reads, “Don’t ask us for freedom. Don’t ask us for bread. We gambled your future, so we’re giving you snakes instead.” The whole thing is daubed with gum, like pock marks or bullet holes.A poster of a black silhouette with some vaguely discernible features. There appears to be a halo around the figure’s head, like a saint’s. The caption reads, “Bless us who are the whole problem. We are here to f[and here, the poster is defaced, so that the remainder of this word is unclear, leaving the final meaning of the text ambiguous] it all up.”A poster depicting Pete Hegseth, with his eyes and mouth painted over with dripping red. The text reads “War Monger,” which probably doesn’t go far enough.

There are also pictures of Luigi Mario with an Anonymous-style expression. That part’s less my scene.

One of my favorite things to do when I’m in unfamiliar territory is to look out for the graffiti. Especially stickers. The most interesting stickers in the immediate area surrounding Pike Place lead directly to the gum wall.
A stair curves down from the market above to a coffee shop. There’s a sign advertising an improv comedy show. Both the wall under the stair and alongside it are plastered with graffiti and stickers. These, blessedly, do not advertise improv comedy shows.

In Washington State for a conference today. Took some time to visit Pike Place this morning. Honestly, I kinda liked the gum wall?
A bald man with a graying beard standing in front of a brick wall literally plastered with chewing gum, which drips down from the ledges like a dragon’s viscous saliva.

Somehow this movie became an Easter tradition for me for a few years. That stopped when the kiddos were born. I’m probably due for a rewatch.

I checked out the digital comics shop and picked up The Poorcraft Cookbook for only one dollar. I wish I’d had this book up when I first started cooking! The section on reverse-engineering restaurant food would have put me in a much different place in my cooking journey.
The cover of The Poorcraft Cookbook, by Nero Villagallos O’ReillyPenny lists the basic spices and seasonings that belong in every pantry: salt, pepper, white sugar, and brown sugar. The Poorcraft girls outline basic cookware every kitchen needs. I still need a wooden cutting board…Penny begins to reverse-engineer a tasty restaurant sandwich.

Ballpoint pen, watercolor, colored pencil, a little crayon, and charcoal pencil.

Our guy pulls up deep in the forest on his 2-speed bike. He’s flanked by tall dark trees and his path is blocked by a massive spider. He lets the Big Fella know it’s on. “Big Fella,” he says. “I fixed my 2-speed. You still wanna race.” Reader, you know Big Fella wants in on that action. Next slide.Against a starry night sky we see silhouettes of Big Fella and our man racing down a hill. It’s unclear in the drawing who will win but Big Fella is likely about to pull away.

My history minor led me to take a single semester class dedicated to the American Civil War. That, and the African American literature class I took for my major, probably shaped my worldview more than anything outside Sunday School.

Reading Faulkner is fun, it’s like solving several mysteries on every page: Who is talking to who? Are they related, and if so, how? What actually happened while I was trying to figure out who was talking to who and whether they’re related?

Man, sometimes food is cool. From Jang: The Soul of Korean Cooking, by Minho Kang.
Embedded in the history of Korean fried chicken is the history of Korea in the twentieth century. First introduced by Black American GIs stationed in Korea during the 6-2-5 War, fried chicken has grown into a national obsession. What was once rare - even the affordable chicken was once out of reach of most Koreans, and cooking oil was too precious for deep-frying - has become one of our greatest culinary exports. Crunchy, salty, and sweet, Korean fried chicken is the most common anju, a genre of food (often fried) that is consumed while drinking. In fact, fried chicken goes by many names, one of which is chimaek, a portmanteau of chikin, meaning fried chicken, and maekju, beer. My favorite nickname for fried chicken, however, is Chisus - "chicken Jesus." That gives you an idea of how revered fried chicken is in South Korea.

I guess there isn’t a true “soul sister” (gains life from opponent ETBs) in standard at the moment. In commander, of course, this slaps.

S.R. Braddy @braddybuns.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I see it useful in a specifically soul sisters lifegain strategy, where you passively gain life from creatures entering. Otherwise, eh?

This set has THREE five-color commanders. That’s probably too many, honestly. I find that particular development far more annoying than the individual designs themselves, which are mostly kinda mid.

How about this? Soul sisters deck generates a ton of tokens. You cast this, blanking their lifegain and all their pridemate triggers. Blue player casts Time Warp. In response, you give them protection, fizzling their spell. It’s a fog with some niche additional applications.

Other superfriend legends give you easier access to interesting abilities. You can tutor from the command zone with Sisay or Djeru. Leori encourages focus on a single PW type. Atraxa beats face MUCH better than Tam. Tomik goes straight to pillow fort. Five color isn’t automatically better.

First “older” bit of writing that I read and immediately understood to be funny was Pride and Prejudice. I read first Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, realized the book would probably be better without the zombies, and… yeah, it very much was.

I’ve read more Pratchett than Adams, but I’ve always found Adams to be TOO cynical. Pratchett seems to care far more deeply about people, despite his skepticism. Adams’s skepticism felt borderline nihilistic to me.
