I have a Big Ask from our community. Many of you will remember our graduates Pikachu and Eevee, who were adopted together. Eevee had dealt with some very challenging chronic diarrhea while she was a kitten, but before adoption, we figured out a food that worked for her & she was all better (thread)

Once again - the problem isn't "ooo AI models are too scary and powerful". It's that the developers of these products are irresponsible dolts, who have absolutely no intention of changing how they behave. Stop making excuses, use existing laws and make them responsible for their own actions.

The frequency with which conservative pols invoke “rapists” as an excuse for bad policing, deportation, and cruel detention just doesn’t seem consistent with how few actual rapes get seriously investigated, much less prosecuted.

The fortress of their bigotry is immune to new facts and evidence, because their racism composes the first principles through which they interpret all other facts - racism is for the helmet crowd *more true* than the historical evidence, in that sense.

Going by what avowed socialists do in office, it’s allowing people who own property in residential areas to build apartments on it using their own money. Which isn’t traditionally considered socialism, but I’ll vote for anyone who likes property rights for people instead of property rights for cars.

Seattle needs paid parking seven days a week, and in most areas 363 days a year. If it’s not important enough to charge for, it can be removed for wider sidewalks, trees, and/or protected bike lanes.

If you can't adopt there are lots of other things you can do to help. Foster, volunteer, fundraise, do a supply drive, sign up for your local shelter's newsletter to find out other ways to help. Remember that volunteering doesn't necessarily mean physical labor - shelters need all kinds of skills!

I missed this decision. FRA gave Brightline West a Buy America waiver to buy ten trains from Siemens, two of which will be made in Germany. Alstom sued FRA, saying they shouldn't have granted that waiver. District Court dismisses on standing. DC Circuit: You do have standing—but you still lose.

If those numbers are even accurate, that’s a housing shortage; the minimum vacancy rate for rentals that can stabilize rents is 10% and Berkeley needs enough housing starts to crash them.

Incredible to see the "experts" on resolving the housing emergency that Spain is experiencing! On every television! @telediario_tve @ANoticias
@tele5_noticias @noticias_cuatro The reality is that we have politicians who try to create decrees and solutions when they lack the preparation or knowledge to devise a real solution to the problem we're facing.
Spain doesn't have a problem of a lack of decrees. It has a problem of a lack of housing.
And as long as the Government keeps confusing announcing measures with solving problems, we'll keep paying the consequences of its inaction.
Subsidizing demand without increasing supply pressures prices. Regulating a market more and more without building new housing doesn't eliminate scarcity: it manages it. Taxing a type of rental can change incentives, but it doesn't lay a single brick either.Because housing doesn't get cheaper by distributing scarcity. It gets cheaper by ending it.
Spain needs to build. A lot.
More available land. Permits in months, not years. More density wherever possible. Legal certainty. Much more public housing and also private housing.
But the Government isn't doing what's necessary. It prefers to intervene on the few homes that exist rather than create the conditions for there to be many more. It prefers to present patches as solutions and load the cost of its failure onto owners, developers, and citizens.
The rest can serve to redistribute, protect certain groups, or change incentives. But let's not confuse that with solving the underlying problem.
You don't fix a lack of housing by better distributing the few homes that exist. You fix it by making many more exist.
Less propaganda. Less patches. Less obsession with intervening on the same apartment.
More supply. More construction. More homes.
