If an event with probability 1/4 is repeated 4 times, it is just as likely to occur twice as it is to occur once. I've always disliked probability and statistics. I prefer Boolean logics.

You know, sometimes normal form is not the best form for building equality proofs. It's particularly painful when you are trying to do proofs on a "newtype wrapper". I guess I should be used to not understanding a unification error message in idris for a long time after encountering it.

A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

Is there an #idris shortcut for things I want at the type and value level? ``` data WithSize : (Nat -> Type) -> Nat -> Type where MkWithSize : (sz : Nat) -> v sz -> WithSize v sz ``` I seem to be using this a lot to enable fast indexing into finger trees with compile-time bounds checking.

Hottest June-July-August ever
From Zack Labe > **The last three months are the warmest on record globally, relative to every other June-July-August period since 1850. Data from NOAA/NCEI's NOAAGlobalTempv6.1.0.** And El Niño is just beginning! 2027 could reach 1.8 degrees C above pre-industrial levels. (Note chart is relative to 1901-2000 baseline, not pre-industrial.) The biggest step you can take to cut emissions (methane is responsible for 1/3rd of the rise in temperatures since pre-industrial times) is to stop eating beef and mutton, and replace cow's milk with a plant-based milk. _You_ can do that. It's something _you_ can do, in a world run by Trumpist billionaires and oil companies. _You._ Of course, we could also vote these drongos out. But while we wait for that to happen, we can still act. We are not helpless.

Okay, so the simplest way to do this is to have _spago_ create the bundle itself via esbuild. If you specify a bundle type of "app" then the Main module will run the main function as it loads, and your (stub) HTML file can just use a script element and doesn't need to contain any JS. You DO […]

I *have* to be making this harder than it is. Can anyone link me to a #Purescript SPA that doesn't use parcel or next.js that is trivial to run locally (like on localhost). I tried and failed to use rollup.

rollup doesn't do what I need which is to replace `parcel serve`, but it does at least have a wasm version that it can use on NetBSD. turbopack was listed as an alternative to parcel, but it would require switching everything to next.js AND it is well-documented not to work on NetBSD, where it […]

Short follow-up it looks like vite and anything based on rolldown is also out. They both install (unlike parcel), but "Error: Unsupported OS: netbsd, architecture: x64" pops out of vite and the stack trace includes "node_modules/rolldown".

"AI" – chatbots that wake up, "set their own goals," and "spontaneously" start hacking servers – is fake. It doesn't have "a 10% chance of ending the human race." The Hugging Face hack isn't a mysterious, supernatural occurrence. It's a Python loop and a chatbot. The people responsible didn't accidentally create god: they created autonomous malicious software and then failed to closely monitor it, resulting in it doing something both foreseeable and bad.
