What autistics go through in America is not normal; and it is oppressive. Meanwhile, I live in a sanctuary 🏰, directly backed by government institutions, laws, and structures that all works in my favor across the other side of the Atlantic. And It's time that I speak about the differences 🌐. 🛡️✊

Along with celebrating the cultures of Indigenous Peoples, today is a day to recognize the resilience and resistance of Indigenous people against colonialism and white supremacy. At ASAN, we uplift and celebrate all autistic and disabled Indigenous people today, and every day.
Gradient watercolor background with the colors of the four directions (black, white, yellow, red) with a light engraving of turtles. Black text reads: Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The ASAN logo is at the bottom. Gradient watercolor background with the colors of the four directions (black, white, yellow, red) with a light engraving of turtles. Text in a white box reads: Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday that celebrates Indigenous people and history. Indigenous means people who have ancestors who lived in a place before others took over. For example, Native Americans are indigenous to North America. Indigenous Peoples’ Day started as a counter-celebration. A counter-celebration is a type of holiday made to protest another holiday. Indigenous Peoples’ Day was made to protest Columbus Day.Gradient watercolor background with the colors of the four directions (black, white, yellow, red) with a light engraving of turtles. Text in a white box reads: Columbus Day is a holiday celebrated on the second Monday of October. Christopher Columbus was an European colonizer who lived in the 1400s. Colonizers are people who take land that belongs to other people. Columbus Day celebrates Christopher Columbus "finding" America. But that’s not true. There were already Indigenous people in America before Columbus came. So Columbus did not “find” America. Colonizers like Columbus did a lot of bad things to the Native Americans. They hurt and killed Native Americans.Gradient watercolor background with the colors of the four directions (black, white, yellow, red) with a light engraving of turtles. Text in a white box reads: Some places still celebrate Columbus Day. At ASAN, we do not think Columbus Day is a good thing to celebrate.
Autistic and disabled Indigenous people are part of our community. So today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Day 12 of Auctober! Autistics are so used to being misunderstood that we tend to over explain in hopes of being crystal clear. Sadly, this can backfire, and just annoy people. We over explain because past experience has taught us that not being specific means we'll be misinterpreted! #auctober
A one panel comic titled "Auctober" and subtitled "Over Explaining".
Honeydew talks to someone off panel. They say "So, the reason for my 30 minute tirade is that, while I do feel that the Star Wars sequel trilogy movies got more hate than they deserved, I'm not the biggest fan of them. I understand that their existence is the reason we're getting so many wonderful shows now, and I appreciate them for that at the very least, however, I still found the characters a bit bland, and the story disjointed" Honeydew is blocking some of this text.

Consent and autism: a story in three acts Act 1: When an Autistic child says “no” they get labelled as “defiant” and adults then focus on forcefully teaching them to say 'yes' instead of accepting their 'no'. ABA is a common method for this but it is far from being the only one.

Just asked my friends if they'd be comfortable with me changing my ideology. Honestly, I've gotten sick of all of this corportocracy, laiseez-faire capitalism non-sense. We're being mistreated simply because the state lets corporations essentially be completely free to do whatever they want.

I once encountered a far-right, separatist nationalist Southern ultraconserative autistic user on Youtube who said that they have "Asperger's" and that they believe that vaccines are what's behind it. I debunked all of this and tried to make them accept their autism but they never responded.

I am also right-wing honestly but I am libertarian instead of conservative. But if I got to speak over those who are still on Trump's side after the August Oval Office executive order, I'd say they're internalized-ableists, and It's just saddening to see that.

Exactly this. The Needs-led model doesn't give vulnerable people legal protection. Employers and schools will have even more of an excuse for not making reasonable adjustments. Accommodations will be seen as optional where funding is short. It's extremely naive to think Needs-led is a solution.

Just because one autistic person shares their personal experience doesn’t mean that your different experience is wrong. Nor are they “negating your experience” by speaking. And for those sharing, know that you don’t speak for all - you speak only for yourself.

I'm tired of this not being common sense. Diagnosing literally means the process of identifying something with signs and for most of history, autism was completely off the medical world and in the early days of autism research, autism had a very strict criteria which just wasn't how it was.
