What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

New: Macklemore will donate entire $1M of his earnings from Ed Sheeran's tour to six orgs helping Palestinians — and invites Robert Kraft to match him. Says he wants to center Palestinians being killed + journalists & aid workers who keep going. "Their risk is of a far different order than mine."
With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.
I will be donating the entire $1 million of my net earnings from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour to six organizations working directly to support the Palestinian people. And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation. Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth.
That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour. Not the headlines or the controversy. It is about Palestinians right to freedom, dignity and safety in their own homeland. I want to center the parents carrying their children into hospitals without the basic resources to treat them, and the physicians, paramedics, journalists and aid workers who keep going back in. I want to center the organizers and activists who have paid real costs for standing with Palestine. Their risk is of a far different order than mine.
Just yesterday, 15 year old Muhammad al Zinati was killed in an Israeli strike while rushing to help aid worker Sherif Lubbad, who had already been injured. He was a child. Both were murdered. Both should be alive. And the ones still under the rubble, whose names exist only in the memories of people who may not have survived to speak them. Writing a check is one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to me. I am doing it because I can, and because these organizations are doing the work while much of the world debates it.
But aid alone cannot address the conditions that make it necessary. This is a manmade injustice, and I believe it requires immediate political change. Palestinians have lived for decades without basic rights and should not have to wait another day to be free. That is where my focus will remain. I will …

London Data Week #LDW starts today with an interesting and packed programme of free events (but book in advance): londondataweek.org/ldw26-events/ I will be giving a talk on Friday about revealing voting biases with 📊 following the recent local elections. londondataweek.org/ldw26-events...
BallotMap for London showing name-ordering bias in ranked votes

A grid of 32 squares arranged in an approximate diamond shape representing the 32 boroughs of London.

Each square is a London borough. Within each, the candidates for the main parties are shown as coloured lines (Greens: green, Labour: red, LibDems: orange, Conservatives: blue, Reform: cyan, Aspire: pink). They are ordered in rows where the top row is the alphabetically first candidate within their party and ward, the second row alphabetically second, and the bottom row alphabetically last. Darkest lines are those where the candidate received most votes within their party; medium lines where they received the middle number of votes within their party and lightest lines where they received the fewest.

Only those in ballots where they were one of three party candidates shown.

This allows us to see where people have split their vote between parties, choosing just one or two from the slate of three in a given party.

A darker lines in the top row compared to the bottom row of each square indicates voting perference for candidates with names closer to start of alphabet.

We see darker lines in the top row for every borough in London. Some boroughs with particularly strong name bias (strong contrast between top and bottom rows) include Enfield (Enf), Havering (Hvg), Bromley (Brm) and Merton (Mrt). Slightly weaker effects can be seen in Richmond (Rch) and Tower Hamlets (Tow) where party preference exerts a strong influence.

Voting data: Democracy Club, 21st May, 2026.

I feel like I've been seeing a lot less #England flags around my neighbourhood for #WorldCup2026 than during previous major football tournaments... Which got me thinking whether it might have anything to do with culture wars and most people generally being decent human beings?! #VennDiagram
Infographic venn diagram titled "Why aren’t there moreEngland flags for the World Cup?". Small circle for people who hang flags because "England is for the English". Larger overlapping circle for people who usually hang flags to support the England team. Most of the larger circle shaded to suggest that people who think foreigners should feel welcome are less likely to hang flags in 2026 than in previous years.
