When Massachusetts passed a "millionaires tax" in 2023, conservatives claimed the rich would flee. But two years later, they haven't — and MA has collected $5.7B for infrastructure and public education. A reminder that positive change can still happen at the state level.

Of all the scammy, weird things the Josh Kraft campaign has done this feels uniquely bad and actually illegal. The FTC requires that sponsored posts be labeled #ad or #sponsored. For months, Kraft paid Boston influencers thousands of dollars for Instagram posts with no disclosure. #mapoli #bospoli
Screenshot of a Cornell Law page

sponsorship disclosure
Sponsorship disclosure is a legal requirement that applies to radio, television, and social media, requiring clear identification of sponsored content and its source. In the United States, sponsored material includes any broadcast or post made in exchange for money, services, or other valuable consideration. Political content is also covered (even if no payment is made) to prevent hidden influence over public opinion. See: 47 CFR § 73.1212 - Sponsorship identification; list retention; related requirements.

47 U.S. Code § 317 requires broadcasters to obtain sponsorship details from all involved personnel, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enforces compliance. Failure to disclose sponsorship, known as payola, is punishable by fines or imprisonment.

On social media, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires disclosure when there is a “material connection” between the person posting and the brand, including payment, gifts, or employment ties. Influencers must clearly label sponsored posts using terms like #ad or #sponsored. Scrutiny of social media platforms like TikTok, have prompted the FTC and Congress to push for stricter enforcement of disclosure rules, especially in cases involving foreign influence, algorithmic promotion, and youth-targeted content.

See: FTC Guidance for Social Media Influencers, FTC’s Endorsement Guides: Being Up-Front With Consumers, 47 U.S. Code § 317 - Announcement of Payment for Broadcast, 16 CFR § 255.5 - Disclosure of Material Connections, 16 CFR § 437.4 - Earnings claims, 47 CFR § 73.1212 - Sponsorship Identification; List Retention; Related Requirements.screenshot of a Josh Kraft video posted to bostonculture account and other influencers in a collaborative post on Instagramscreenshot of a @secretboston instagram post of a josh kraft video with no disclosurecomments on the secretboston post

oh my god. around midnight last night, CPD flooded an occupied, 61-unit apartment building with tear gas and pepper spray to try to force one guy out. it didn’t work! the guy’s still there! but they did make a bunch of people sick and displaced instead
Police engaged in a nightlong standoff Friday in Cambridge after a man wielded a machete in Central Square and made it to his home in The Port neighborhood, according to police and police scanner reports.
In an effort to get the barricaded man out of his home, police used gas that sent several sickened residents fleeing instead.Gas was shot into the building shortly after midnight and rose through the building - which had not been fully evacuated. The 1879 five-story brick building, known as the George Close, was once a warehouse. Its 53,724 square feet holds 61 apartments.
One man came out livid from being affected by the gas - a mix of pepper spray and tear gas, according to a Pro EMS responder. One of the people watching over the hours took video of a woman on the fourth floor coughing and calling for help. Elderly residents in medical masks were assisted out of the building at 1:25 am., followed by a man in a wheelchair and others. One family on the third floor was exposed to the gas for five to 10 minutes, said a man who described trying to escape. "I vomited so many times," he said, sitting on the sidewalk with his back on the brick building. "I was trying to push my father's wheelchair. The police should have notified us."
Firefighters were brought in to take care of residents affected by the gas.
While the additional crisis of sickened residents grew, some argued with police for the right to go in and retrieve pets or neighbors, Just A Start delivered food for the people waiting. At 1:40 a.m., police arranged for the doors to be opened at the Fletcher Maynard Academy across the street so residents could be nearby when they were allowed back in.
But, police told a Just A Start manager, the initial problem of the barricaded man was not yet resolved.

The Cambridge Police (still exclusively on X, naturally) are furiously spinning this debacle. After hours of antagonizing community members, they teargassed a low-income apartment building with NO WARNING. An elderly resident & a baby were sent to the hospital, and dozens suffered while CPD watched.
