Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired! www.npr.org/2025/05/09/g...

Once again a total Norwegian dominance in the men's 20k skiathlon. Sigh. I'm sure that's very fun for Norway, but it makes for such a bummer of a watch. Zero tension.

OKAY YES—when I used to train new designers coming in, I would tell them a variation of this. Like you MUST not let your ego be tied to the work. It is tempting, but at the end of the day how well the work does/doesn’t do isn’t personal but you *will* take it personally if you don’t learn to let go.

Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes. It proceeds by depriving the old stories of their intellectual and ethical complexity, turning their truth-telling to sentimental platitude.

Isn't Netflix bleeding money? (At least according to the shareholders) Isn't that why it's always whining about password sharing and raising the price and adding ads and whatnot? How the fuck can it afford to buy those at once? Also, that feels like an anti-trust violation

Apparently Smashwords royalties are changing as of January 1, 2026. Books under $2.99 will get 40% list; books $2.99 or over get 75%. (Amazon KDP, for context, is generally 35% and 70% respectively) Draft2Digital owns Smashwords, so if you publish via D2D it's easy to add ebooks there. 💙📚

Draft2Digital email that reads:

Smashwords Store Simplifies Royalty Rates
For the first time in its nearly 18-year history, the Smashwords store will update its royalty rates.

Effective January 1, 2026, books priced under $2.99 will earn 40% list.

Books priced $2.99 and higher will earn 75% list, the highest among all major ebook retailers.

Since 2008, the Smashwords store paid royalties using a complicated formula that was based on the dollar amount of the shopping cart checkout rather than the price of the book. Smashwords is simplifying the rate structure so it's more transparent, predictable, and easier to understand. To view a summary of the rate structure at various price points, visit our Royalty Rates page.

What's next

There is no action you need to take. We’ll continue to pay the old Smashwords rates through the end of 2025. Beginning today, when you enter a digital book price for digital stores—in Step 4 of the ebook publishing process—you’ll see the new Smashwords royalties calculated in the “Projected Royalties” column.
