Apparently Smashwords royalties are changing as of January 1, 2026. Books under $2.99 will get 40% list; books $2.99 or over get 75%. (Amazon KDP, for context, is generally 35% and 70% respectively) Draft2Digital owns Smashwords, so if you publish via D2D it's easy to add ebooks there. 💙📚

Okay, because I need to try and re-spark some writing community joy after… *gestures at everything* how about a revisit on a way you can absolutely support authors you love for zero dollars: by dropping a low-stress, three-sentence review somewhere.

The Three Sentence Review

If it’s stressing you out, and you want to write a review, a helpful review can easily be made with three simple sentences:

One: What you can expect from the book (without spoilers).
“‘The Unwanted’ is a great young adult story where a young gay teen struggling with a bully learns he’s got bigger problems when his long-lost mother returns, reveals she’s an Amazon, and tells him he’s part of an important prophecy.

Two: What was unique/awesome/moving/exciting about the book (again, no spoilers).
“Taking Greek mythology and blending it with the real struggles of a gay teen is a delicate balance, and Jeffrey Ricker manages it with aplomb.”

Three: Using a better-known author or a genre, which readers do you think would enjoy the book?
“Any reader who loved Rick Riordan’s ‘The Lightning Thief’ should grab ‘The Unwanted.’”

It doesn’t have to be an essay to be helpful, and you’d be surprised how much even a simple review does help an author.

He doesn’t want to scare his stranger. Hedoesn't want to make the panic worse. So he makes no sudden moves, merely tilts his head upon his crossed arms to keep the man in the most optimal view.

Tynan knows that he frightens people. He knows that people look at him and they blanch, that they hurriedly walk in the other direction. He knows that they cross the street to avoid him. He knows that he’s too big, too tall, that his muscles are too intimidating, that his voice is too rough. He knows that he has scores of scars and tattoos, many of which are visible even when he’s wearing a full get-up. And he knows that his eyes are the cold kind of blue that his mother says means he doesn’t have a soul, and he even knows that he doesn’t smile enough—and when he does it’s never in the right way, either.

People don’t like him, they turn away at the first glimpse of him, they don't want to be near him. He frightens them. He knows.
