Trump’s new AI website is kinda fun, it turns out.
Can the president use taxpayer funds to air his old campaign ads on TV?

No. Federal appropriations law has long barred using taxpayer funds for political advertising.

The Office for National Statistics actually tested when the British public think "young" ends, "middle aged" starts and, finally, when you hit "old". The verdict is: "Young" ends at 30 "Middle age" begins at 45 "Old" starts at 70 Aged 31 to 44? Enjoy being a boring "adult".

Very much enjoyed @mjrobbins.com conversation-paced rant about the supposed threat of so-called superintelligent AI. martinrobbins.substack.com/p/the-ai-apo...
Screenshot from linked article reads:

Civilisation is the gearbox for the engines of our minds; human intelligence is its attribute. The scale of that intelligence is not governed by the person or entity with the highest IQ. You can't make a car that goes at 3000mph by just putting a rocket in it. I'm not sure it's possible to be superintelligent. To me it's like saying you're going to make the ocean superwet by pouring more water into it.
Rationalists desperately wish this wasn't the case, because it means the promise of the Al priesthood, the promise of a world where being smart and thinking better magically solves all your problems - could lead you to the gates of heaven itself! - is a lie: that the world isn't changed by thinkers, but doers. That's why every contrived thought experiment that involves an AI triggering the end of humanity involves, ultimately, human beings doing something incredible stupid with real stuff, like shipping a super-virus to an angry teenager or firing a nuclear arsenal. The boring risks of human agency that we already face today.

Professor X asks a girl, "what is your mutant power?"

Girl replies: "I can guess how many pulls to turn a ceiling fan off on the first try!"

She points up and says: "3 pulls"

Professor X stands up and pulls 3 times. After the third pull the fan turns off.

Professor X: "Yeah thats cool and all, but not really a super power..."

Girl: "Yeah I was jut kidding, I can heal paraplegics"

Professor X, still standing: "Oh my god"

Ooh, they’re all good. I think the first one just edges it. (From the New Yorker).
Cartoon caption competition. The cartoon shows two women scientists discussing 4 chimps behind a glass screen dressed as a barbershop quartet (hats, jackets, walking sticks). The three entries are:

“I don't care how well they can sing. They're getting on that rocket." John Kozak, Atlanta, Ga.

"Do you ever think we maybe have too much funding?"
Jason Ryan, Seattle, Wash.

"The Shakespeare's complete they've moved on to Sondheim now.”

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.
